How our Government "Represents" us… • When individuals are elected to make decisions on behalf of a larger group. • In our school, which groups make decisions on behalf of all students?
Lets try to “Order a pizza” • What are 3 pizza toppings you will absolutely NOT have on a pizza? • What 3 toppings would you prefer? Is it an easy task to order pizza for the whole class?
What is the "Common Good"? Definition: • Greatest good, for the greatest number of people. • What is best for the community and all its members because it best promotes dignity, security and prosperity.
Why do Humans choose to live in Communities? • Could any of us survive alone? • People choose to live in communities because it's easier; basic necessities of life easier obtained together (food, shelter, companionship, security, clothing, etc)

Characteristics of a healthy community? • Common identity, goal, purpose • People value the common good • People feel like they belong • People value responsibilities over rights • Safety • Needs addressed collectively • Conflict resolution process
Other challenges to community living • Dominant culture-vs-minority culture • Who holds real ‘power’ (ability to direct others to achieve what you want)?
Challenges of Community Living • Voluntarily giving up personal preferences and likes… • …to accommodate the needs of others • In other words, it is challenging to achieve… • THE COMMMON GOOD (=greatest good for greatest number) • Or, it is a challenge to achieve a SOCIAL TRADE OFF (sacrifice of personal preference for entire community)
