  1. LHC Machine Protection ReviewIs the LHC ready to Increase Beam power from 3 to 30 MJ Summary of Review Jerry Annala Dean Still

  2. Operating Parameters

  3. Some Protections LHC has the Tevatron does not • Almost everything can abort the beam • Collimators set near the beam at all times • Cannot inject “unsafe beam” into an empty LHC • Orbit feedback at 25 Hz on the ramp and squeeze • Tune feedback

  4. Last two weeks QPS/UPS Cryogenics CC Pt6 Electrical perturbation Bunch trains Access/SPS Bunch trains 25b 48b 50b 4

  5. Ramp - collimators 6.9.2010 LHC operations 5

  6. Sequencer 6.9.2010 LHC operations 6

  7. & 6 pages of procedure 6.9.2010 LHC operations 7

  8. Injection sequencer 6.9.2010 LHC operations 8

  9. Findings • Hardware protection systems are well designed and tested. These are mostly in very good shape. • Biggest weakness is sequencer stability, operating procedures, and switching between HEP operation and commissioning.

  10. Points of Interest • Not much mention of going below 3.5 m b* • Loss events (dust falling through beam?) • Not a single quench with circulating beam. • Sequencing (and other important software) cannot do things in parallel • Many people asking us if we are going to run 3 more years. • United Airlines does not keep spare APUs for the Boeing 757 in Geneva.
