  2. # 1 – Watch and Learn The purpose of the practicum is to introduce Sport and Recreation Management majors to the variety and scope of employment opportunities within the field. The purpose of the internship is to provide a full-time professional experience.

  3. The goals are simple…… The goals of the practicum are: • To identifyareas of interest/disinterest, ultimately finding the correct professional fit. • To develop goals for future career paths. • To develop awareness of personal strengths, abilities and areas of interest. • To identify areas requiring self-improvement and to develop strategies to eliminate weakness. • To broaden work-related experience in the area of Sport and Recreation Management.

  4. Internship Goals The goals of the internship are: • To provide the student with work experience that broadens the understanding of the workplace (human behavior, management styles, leadership characteristics, work ethics, task prioritizing, etc.). • To assist students in developing goals and objectives for their future career path. • To work with a professional mentor and understand performance evaluation and accountability. • To develop human relation skills. • To provide the student with work experience on which to build and launch a professional career.

  5. Please Keep In Mind……These are Classes! SRM 282 and SRM 482 Just like any other JMU course, you will have assignments and you must meet deadlines in order to pass. SRM 282 is Worth 3 Credits and SRM 482 is Worth 6 Credits. You must complete SRM 282 before you are eligible for SRM 482

  6. # 2 – Review Criteria WHEN ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO COMPLETE A PRACTICUM OR INTERNSHIP? AND WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS?

  7. When am I eligible? SRM 282 Practicum After you have completed: • SRM 241 SRM 482 Internship After you have completed: • SRM 282, SRM 333, and have completed 72 credit hours • Cannot be on academic probation

  8. What are the requirements? SRM/KIN 472 SRM/KIN 482 400 hours Over a Minimum of 10 Weeks 40 Hours Per Week You may only carry ONE additional course while enrolled for SRM/KIN 482 90 hours over the course of the academic term enrolled Fall and Spring Academic Term 90 hours over 15 weeks = 6-8 hours per week Minimum 4 weeks Summer Academic Term 90 hours over Minimum 4 Weeks = 22.5 hours per week 8 Weeks = 11.25 hours per week

  9. # 3 – Find a Practicum/Internship Site • Start Early. Don’t wait until the last minute to secure your site. • Don’t settle for convenience. Have a strategy and look for sites that will help you get to where you want to go in your career. • Consult with other people, such as: • SRM Practicum & Internship Coordinator • SRM Academic Advisor • SRM Faculty • SRM Alumni • Industry professionals working in your area of interest • Website Resources are listed on the following Website: http://www.jmu.edu/shsrm/srm/internship

  12. Will my practicum or internship site be approved? All practicum and internship sites must be approved by the SRM Practicum/Internship Coordinator Most sites will be approved as long as the organization fits within the sport and recreation industry.

  13. # 4 – Complete Paperwork • You will need to complete an agency agreement form that will be submitted to the SRM Practicum & Internship Coordinator. • In order to receive your override during open registration, complete your paperwork by the following dates: • Fall practicum or internship – April 15 • Spring practicum or internship – November 15 • Summer practicum or internship – April 15 • The agency agreement form can be found at the following Website: http://www.jmu.edu/shsrm/srm

  14. Agency Acceptance Form The deadlines are the same for SRM 282/KIN 472 and SRM/KIN 482 Spring Practicum – November 15 Summer Practicum – April 15 Fall Practicum – April 15

  15. The Form is In, Now What? • When your form is processed, you will receive an email from the SHSRM Administrative Assistant telling you that you can register for the practicum or internship class. • Experiences should begin the first week of classes.

  16. # 5 – Enroll • Once you have received the email from the Administrative Assistant, you can now enroll for the course. • To enroll, go to My Madison. • Remember, all practicum and internship experiences are classes and you must be registered for the course prior to starting your hours with the site agency.
