  1. Aim:If any, how might the current issues in the Middle East impact America and its citizens? (Think in terms of the volatile cultural, political, social, and economical “climate”). Do Now: 1. Please take out HW# 6—the current events article and the analysis for 14.2. Ellie is coming around to check it. 2. Amongst your neighbors, discuss your article Did anyone have a similar story surrounding the Middle East? In your notebooks, take note of any common themes/patterns noticed while discussing the different articles.

  2. What were some of the issues discussed (ONE MIC – please). In conducting this assignment over the weekend, you were probably saying to yourselves: • (%#*#@!!! - Jason! It’s the weekend, man! Grrr!!!) • Why should I care about these people and their issues? • What does any of this have to do with me anyway? • Does everyone feel the same way, or did someone have a different take?

  3. Think in terms of: • Humanitarian – caring about your fellow man. • College/University in a few years & the Select Service Act. • Soon to be taxpayers – whether you care or not, your tax $$ will be used for aid, defense, transportation, etc., all towards “peacekeeping.”

  4. Show the 60 minutes video – current events.

  5. Connecting questions to the video 1) Who were the two opposing groups? • Why were they opposing one another? 2) What was going through your minds as you watch the video?

  6. Free Write: (10 minutes) Based on your understanding of the volatile (heated) history of the two opposing groups: • Do you think that peace lies just beyond the horizon? • Will that peace be achieved in our lifetime? Give specific responses/examples as you write.

  7. Aim: What were causes and effects of the revival of trade in Europe? Do Now:Hand in 14.2 HW. • Vocabulary: Analyzing two words: Revival & Renaissance • Define each term: What does it mean? • Explain its significance: When/where mightthis be an important word?

Please copy-- Re (prefix): Anew, once again, do over, go back to what was once there, get back to the way things once was, etc. • Don’t copy— Originates from the Latin word – nascentia, from nasci ‘be born.’ During the middle ages the word was translated into French Vernacular → renaissance – re – ‘back, again’ + naissance ‘birth.’

  9. OBJECTIVES/FOCUS OF THE DAY: • Explain factors that led to the revival of trade in Europe. • Describe goods traded in Europe and explain why fairs began. • Identify important business developments that resulted from the growth of trade.

  12. Revival of Trade Italian ships brought goods back from Asia. Viking ships brought Asian goods to northern Europe. The Crusades stimulated trade. Revival of Trade Flanders became am important trade region. The Hanseatic League set up trading posts.

Both long & Short-Term effects of the Revival (Please copy in your notebooks) • Trade routes • Trade in Italy – sea and overland trade routes • Trade in northern Europe – growth in population and wealth • The Hanseatic League – German trading cities joined together to increase trade • Trade Goods and Markets • Luxury goods such as dyes, medicines, silks, spices • Manufactured goods such as cotton, linen, art objects • Local markets gave rise to fairs for sale of imported goods with added tax • Social events

  14. GW: Revival of Trade—how did moving to a market economy affect people?(20 min) Part 1: • Read over pp. 324-326 in your textbook. • In your notebooks, make a chart that shows: • Key points about the barter system • Key points about the market economy Complete this chart with your group.

  15. Part 2:Discuss the following questions, and answer it as a group: • Imagine you lived during the Middle Ages and use the barter system. Over time, people begin using money instead.  • Consider how the following individuals would be affected by change to the market economy. • A peasant, a clergy (church official), merchant, a king • Who would benefit from this change? Why? • Who would be negatively affected? Why? Each individual is responsible for scribing (writing down) each response in his/her notebooks.
