Engage • Show a video clip of a storyteller talking about Bill Pickett.
Explore • What was the last grade level Bill Pickett attended in school? • What rodeo trick did Bill Pickett become famous for? • How did Bill Pickett die? • After Bill Pickett died, how did he become famous a second time?
Explain • Read article with the students and correct or add new information to the chart.
Extend • Use the information from the chart to fill out index cards/sticky notes to make a card pyramid. 1.Main Idea 2.Detail 4.Detail 6.Detail 8.Detail 3.Supporting Detail 5.Supporting Detail 7.Supporting Detail 9.Supporting Detail
Have students gather up cards, keeping them in numerical order. • Students should move around the room, find a partner, and use their cards to tell their partner about Bill Pickett. • Only give students about 2-3 minutes to do this.
Evaluate • Use information from the card sort to write a summary of the Bill Pickett article. • Younger students – Write the summary together the first few times, gradually releasing control until all students can work independently or with a partner • Older students – Change the length of the summary • Ex: 50 words or less 140 characters
