Where are you coming from? Twitter - a Clean Nest? How do you handle your Twitter follows? A – accept all follows & autofollow back B – checkout follows sometimes & follow most C – checkout follows when I get email & follow any that look interesting never block D – check for new follows sometimes, follow if look interesting occasionally block/report spam E – check for new follows often, follow if meet my criteria, monitor/block/report spam if not
Where am I coming from? Twitter - a Clean Nest? I manage my Twitter follows very actively. • Have clear ideas about what I seek in follows • Check for new follows often (daily/3-5 times per week) • Follow if meet my criteria • Monitor if unsure /block/report spam if not

Criteria Twitter - a Clean Nest? I look at some or all of: Profile – does it tell me about them Avatar – photo or meaningful image Follower/Following numbers & ratio – more followers Recent Tweets – number, topics, style, type Followers – type - proportion of educators Background image – relevant or engaging My own prefs – no: marketers, self styled gurus, social media experts, minors, pple who follow zillions
Twitter - a Clean Nest? Provocative avatar, tweets, profile, language Following many – few followers Zero or minimal tweets Heavy marketing “feel” Self styled expert/guru Repetitive tweets Free giveaways promised Get a zillion followers by … “Secret” information promised

Twitter - a Clean Nest? 1. From your Twitter ac choose Settings 2. Select the Connections tab 3. Check who has access 4. Revoke access for those you don’t trust 5. Change your password

The key to fighting hacking, spam & phishing Keep your own nest clean Warn your stream if you see probable attacks Tell others if you think they’ve been attacked Use Twitter’s report process If you just block anyone who sends an odd DM then the spammers will win Be kind! However careful you are it could be YOU next time!
