Home Energy Management & Smart Grid TechnologyStatus Update Spring 2012 Devon Taylor
Objectives Completed • Design and implement a working small scale home electrical system • Design and implement circuit to rectify and amplify current transformer output • Design circuit for turning relays on and off • Program Microcontroller to perform A-D conversion for current readings
Objectives Not Completed • Implement relay circuits to amplify microcontroller output • Program microcontroller to switch relays on and off • Program the microcontroller to exchange data with the PC • Develop a web interface • Provide power consumption data • Allow switching control over each individual relay
Issues During Design/Implementation • Rectification circuit using bridge rectifiers causes voltage drops across diodes, op-amps compensated for this non-linearity • Diodes must be used with relays to prevent damage to microcontroller when coils magnetic field collapses • Needed a bipolar power supply to use op-amps, decided to use PC power supply • Needed a compatible plug/power source • Working with 120V AC required research to understand measuring and wiring
Project Outlook • Slightly behind predicted timeline • Expected to reach completion on time as long as there are no major hold-ups
