  2. Inauguration • Formal induction into office. • The presidential inauguration of Barack Obama will be on January 20, 2009

  3. Oath of Office • Promise to uphold the requirements of the office • “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” • The oath of office is mandatory for a President upon the beginning a term of office. The wording is prescribed by the Constitution.

  4. Inauguration Ball • A celebration for the inauguration of the new president with a large party or dance • The Obamas will be attending several inaugural balls in Washington, DC the night of the inauguration.

  5. Chief Justice • the presiding judge of the U.S. Supreme Court. • John G. Roberts, Jr., the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, will administer the oath of office to Barack Obama.

  6. Swearing In • an official ceremony where a person takes an oath of office, allegiance, etc. • When swearing an oath, the new president promised that he would do his best in his job.

  7. Constitution • a system of laws and principles of a government in a written document. • The Constitution of the United States is the law of the land.

  8. Commander-in-Chief • the commander of the nation's military forces. • The President of the United States is in charge of all branches of the military and decides when the United States needs to fight in a war.
