  6. TREASURE CLUE #1 Harborlites Mission Statement Harborlites’ mission is to be an exciting, award-winning chorus performing 4-part harmony, barbershop style. We are committed to the highest standards of musical excellence, education, personal growth and the magic we create in every captivating performance.

MUSICAL ARTISTRY The ultimate in the musical performance is achieved when the performer reaches out at the beginning of the performance, takes the audience in the palm of her hand and holds it there until the performance has concluded, keeping each listener totally spellbound by the emotional impact achieved. Musical artistry occurs when all other aspects of the music category have been achieved. The performer then has the freedom to present a magical experience that is aesthetically satisfying and memorable for the performer and the listener. Such a presentation of inanimate words and notes will result in beautiful, living barbershop music.” • JCDB, Music Category

  11. TREASURE CLUE #2 • WE ARE A SINGING ORGANIZATION! • Make this reality a part of your chorus culture • We did Vocal Gold to improve our singing…what can you do?

  12. TREASURE CLUE #2 THE BASICS OF VOCAL GOLD • Vocal Production Workshop all members must attend • Focus on CONSTANTLY reinforcing basic skills through weekly “Skill Building” time (instead of “warm-ups”) • Individual attention through PVIs and tape listening/evaluation

  13. TREASURE CLUE #2 • THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO MUSICAL EXCELLENCE! • The focus on improving vocal skills must be: • Relentless • Constant • Evaluated Continually • Re-invented As Required • NOTHING ELSE (Artistry, Physicality) CAN ADVANCE UNTIL YOUR VOCAL SKILLS DO!

  14. TREASURE CLUE #3 COMMUNICATING MUSICAL ARTISTRY: FIVE DIRECTING SKILLS • Music Selection • Musical Plan Creation • The Use of an “Artistic Vocabulary” • The Use of Vocal Modeling • The Use of Body Language

  15. TREASURE CLUE #3 MUSIC SELECTION • Choose music that speaks to you on an emotional level – this fosters believability • Chorus vocal skills must match the skill required by the arrangement • Challenge chorus with arrangements, but be realistic!

  16. TREASURE CLUE #3 MUSICAL PLAN CREATION • Let the chorus be your voice, a mirror of your emotions • Borrow ideas from other artists • Dare to risk in your artistic interpretation!

  17. TREASURE CLUE #3 • You have many “languages” with which to communicate artistic singing to your chorus • Use your words, voice, and body to communicate the emotional and artistic sounds you want your chorus to create with their voices

  18. THE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE The focus of the Showmanship category is the evaluation of the salesmanship of the musical product. This includes the elements of preparation, the visual plan, and the creation and communication of on-stage magic.” • JCDB, Showmanship Category
