Working in Digital Earth • Digital Earth Policies • No food or drinks • Open hours are posted inside and outside the lab or are available online at: http://dusk.geo.orst.edu/de/de_teach.html • Printing Policies • Printing costs: • $0.10/page in black and white • $0.45/page in color • Printing quotas: • Undergraduates: $25.00 • Graduates: $30.00
Computer Use in Digital Earth • To access class folders, data, and drop boxes you must log in using your SCIENCE account • If it’s your first time using a SCIENCE account: • Your username will be the same as your ONID user name • Your password will be temp123 • Once you log in you will be asked to change your password, be sure to write in down somewhere • All class folders are located on the S: drive labeled classes • All assignments will use ArcGIS 10 which is located on a Virtual Machine
Lab Assignments • Total of 9 Labs assignments • Use a variety of lab materials • Labs 1, 2, and 5 use online tutorials from ESRI’s virtual classroom • Labs 3, 4 and 7 are based off actual GIS data and real world projects • Labs 6, 8 and 9 use the lab textbook: GIS Tutorial 2: Spatial Analyst Workbook • Each assignment is worth a total of 50 points • Lab Notebook • Required to create and keep a lab notebook for each weeks assignment that includes tips and tricks that you learned about from that week’s lab • Pre-test • Required, but used as baseline information for the TA’s and your instructor, i.e. not graded
Lab Assignment Policies • What’s Due: • Each labs final requirements will vary, so pay close attention to the requirements outline in the week’s PowerPoint and within the lab’s instructions • Due Dates: • All labs are due the next week before the beginning of your lab section • e.g. Section 10’s Lab 1 is due January 17, 2012 before 1 p.m. • For each day late the maximum lab value is reduced by 5 points • Grades • Copies of your graded lab assignments will be returned to your student folder on the S drive or handed back during lab • Grades will be posted on Blackboard
Lab Assignments Tips • Lab Instructions and data are available on the class folder on the S drive • Lab assignments will be submitted to your lab section’s drop box e.g. S:\Geo565\Dropbox\Wednesday_10am\Labx • File Naming Format • All submitted files should be saved with the file name YourONIDUserName_SectXX_Labx e.g. bauerj_Sect10_Lab1 • All printed documents need to include your name, the date, the lab assignment and your lab section e.g. Jennifer Bauer, 1/8/2012, Lab 1, Section 10 • To prevent data loss: • Save your maps early and often! • Save all maps and certificates first to your student folder on the S drive, then copy and paste those documents into your lab’s drop box
Pre Test • Provide us with baseline information about your current knowledge of critical GIS basics • Not graded
Lab 1- Learning ArcGIS DesktopModule 1: Getting Started • Need to work within the virtual machine to access ArcGIS 10 • Make sure to map to the Classes drive through the virtual machine so you can access the class folder and your student folder • Copy and paste the lab 1 instructions into your own Student folder, and start working from there • Need to access an Esri online virtual training course • Need to create an Esri Global ID User account • Be sure to write down the username and password you select • Recommended that you use you ONID username • Once you have an account, come up and get your 14-digit online course code • You are responsible for your code, once it is enter you will not have to reuse it again for that course • Turn In Requirements: • Need to turn in a copy of your Youth Centers exported map make sure to name it as: yourONIDusername_Lab1.pdf and save it in your lab’s drop box • Due next week before the start of your next lab
