Bridport Primary schools Rights Respecting Journey (with the occasional pit stop on the way!)
Our tortoise-like beginning! • We were initially approached by Peter Barton in 2005. • We resisted everything he had to offer us! • Staff were not keen to change our well established systems • He kept coming back!
The worm begins to turn! • We began to see that this was not about changing what we had but building on it. • We had positive behaviour strategies well embedded • We had effective circle times and whole school Golden Rules working well. • This was an opportunity to develop awareness of the wider implications of citizenship
He had us hooked! • We began to use demonstration lessons • We explored the materials • We talked about the convention with the children • We liked the ideas and the message • We dipped our toes in but we still felt a little lacking in skill and confidence. • We held further staff training to move forward and explored the issues – support was offered.
An unexpected creature arrives! • We are approached to take part in the SEAL project • We recoiled at the thought of yet another new initiative! • We looked at the materials and realised this was something we could really use and it complimented our existing work. • It also fit beautifully with RRS
We take the bull by the horns! • We gathered existing planning from citizenship and PSHE and linked this to RRS targets and SEAL topics to create a big picture. • We began in September 2006 with a whole new approach and enjoyed the way the different areas of curriculum complimented each other .
The tortoise and the Hare scenario! • Some members of staff raced ahead enjoying the new challenges • Others needed more guidance as they slowly accepted the changes • But everyone had a go.
Raising the profile • We decided to raise the profile of the work we are doing as a whole school. • We linked classes and chose an article each – we planned as creatively as we could • Children worked across the key stages collaboratively for a whole day. • We set up an exhibition of all that we had done and invited everyone!
Where are we now? • We will never complete this journey – there is always more to learn. • We are enjoying exploring the curriculum and the chance to be more creative across areas. • We have embedded SEAL and RRS in our curriculum • Our pupils are more aware of their role as citizens in the wider world. • We talk the language of Rights and Responsibilities. • Staff and parents are starting to see the relevance of the work we are doing. • These values form one of the targets on our SDP.
Where to next? • Developing our partnership with parents • Improving our partnership with pupils – allowing them to have more say in how they learn
