  2. The Technological Revolution • Micro-processors make computers more popular and practical. They become more common in homes and offices. • Bill Gates co-founds Microsoft. Creates Windows in 1985 • The Internet expanded & became popular around 1997 • Biotechnology brought advances in medicine and the discovery of DNA • Expanded use of air conditioning in homes and offices

The Clinton Years • During Clinton’s 1st term he battled with the Republican Congress over the federal budget but managed to raise taxes, cut spending • 1997: 1st time in 24 years budget was balanced.1998 we had a surplus • Arranged NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) in 1994 and Canada, Mexico, and the US created a free trade zone • 1996: Clinton ran for re-election against Bob Dole and Ross Perot and won • Clinton is impeached for perjury (lying under oath) & obstruction of justice but NOT removed from office (acquitted)—reputation suffered

  4. America Enters a New Century • 2000: George W. Bush wins a controversial election over Democrat Al Gore • Florida had to be re-counted multiple times due to hanging chads and there was controversy over counting methods and vote totals. A Supreme Court decision (Bush v. Gore) and the electoral college stopped the counting and concluded Bush to be the winner

War on Terrorism • Sept. 11th, 2001 terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in NYC • The attack was traced back to Middle Eastern Muslim group, al-Qaeda • Osama bin Laden was the group’s founder • With the support of Congress, Bush reacts to the attacks and declared a War on Terrorism • Put a freeze on funding for people suspected of terrorism • Created Office of Homeland Security, later merged all agencies responsible for public safety into the Department of Homeland Security • USA Patriot Act: allowed secret searches for terrorist activities • Bioterrorism: The U.S. experienced an Anthrax scare • October 7th, 2001: US begins bombing targets in Afghanistan and searching there for bin Laden

  6. The Axis of Evil • Jan. 2002, Bush warned that an “axis of evil” (Iraq, Iran, & North Korea) posed a danger to the world with “weapons of mass destruction” and promised to take strong action • Increased pressure on Iraq and demanded Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, be overthrown for using chemical weapons • Congress continued to approve the use of force in the Middle East • Weapons inspections began, but no evidence was found • Saddam Hussein was finally found in December, 2003 • The controversy over the war continues
