  1. Walkertown High School Community Presentation May 26, 2011

  2. Current Site as of Friday, May 20, 2011

  3. Aerial of the Site

  4. Summer 2011 Completions Stadium/Fields/Road: Summer 2011 School Building: November (projected)

  5. Why the Delay? • Weather

  6. Possible Alternatives • Make do with middle school: Add 230 high school students to the projected 700 middle school students • Must add 10 additional classroom spaces (divide gym/auditorium into classrooms, etc.) • Infrastructure – especially technology – would suffer • Unsatisfactory solution

  7. Possible Alternatives • Bring in pods for 2 months • Technology and other infrastructure needs would be difficult to install and lack the quality of permanent installations • Would have to be located on athletic fields, causing problems for sports • Expensive solution for short-term need • Off-campus sites in Walkertown • Would have to bring in infrastructure needs, such as technology, telephones, food • Expensive solution for short-term need

  8. What does WS/FCS have? • Site with space • Space enough to keep school community together • Site with infrastructure in place for technology, meals, phones, etc. • Site with proximity to Walkertown • Site with affordability

  9. Why Atkins • Atkins has space as it converts to a dedicated magnet (no residential population) • It was built as a three-school structure, so it has room to keep a separate school of 400 students. • Built as a technology magnet 7 years ago, so excellent technology in place • Proximity to Walkertown makes transportation affordable for the district (7 miles or 11 minutes from the new site) • Existing infrastructure best option and no additional cost for WS/FCS (Cafeteria, Phones, Bell System)

  10. Short-term Facility Solution: Atkins High School • We have identified 10 classrooms with lockers separate from Atkins’ student body • Separate entrance (site map next slide) • Walkertown Administrative Offices (Mr. Hardy and office staff) • Bell time will vary from Atkins • Atkins Bell: 8:40-3:25 (Same bell all year) • Walkertown Bell: 9:00-3:45 (After move, students will go back to a normal high school schedule: 8:55-3:40) • Walkertown will be on 3rd lunch • Walkertown will share band and art rooms, but will be taught by Walkertown staff. Walkertown will use the auxiliary gym • Separate bus entry and exit

  11. Athletics • Fall sports (Football, Men’s Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Tennis, Cheerleading, Women’s Golf, Cross Country, Women’s Field Hockey) • Fall practices will take place on the Walkertown campus (with the exception of tennis) • If a student-athlete rides a bus to school, his/her stop in the afternoon will be at the new campus in Walkertown • We will play a JV Schedule • All athletics will be played on Walkertown campus • Band/Club Activities will remain on Atkins Campus
