  1. FORCES AND STRUCTURES Force - the influence that tends to change the speed and direction of a stationary or a moving body.

  2. FORCES AND STRUCTURES The effect of a force depends upon its: • MAGNITUDE • Measure of how strong a force is • Newtons (N) • DIRECTION • Ex. Push vs Pull • POINT & PLANE of Application • Where and how a force is applied • Ex. High vs Low

  3. TENSION, COMPRESSION, TORSION and SHEAR

  4. TENSION – pulling or stretching forceCOMPRESSION- pushing or squeezing force

  5. TENSION

  6. COMPRESSION

  7. TORSION – twisting force – applying opposite rotational forces

  8. SHEAR- two parallel opposite forces applied at same point- causes tearing

  9. Draw and label a diagram showing the forces acting on and within a flagpole and its flag in a strong wind.

  10. Strut - A member of structure that is subjected to compression. Tie - A member of structure that is subjected to tension.
