2. The Field Study Procedures Preparation work • Divide into groups of 4-5 students. Delegate your jobs before you go to the field. • Propose the date and time of carrying out the field work. Report it to the subject teacher before you go. • On the map provided, decide a route that you can cover all the sites of interest. • Design a questionnaire for interviewing the residents, the shop owners and the nearby residents / works to find out their views on the urban renewal project at Lee Tung Street or McGregor Street.

4. Go along the route your group designed. Identify Site 1 to Site 10 at the field. Classify the urban renewal strategy adopted at each site. Take photos and/or video clips to support your answer. B. On the site

5. Look for the evidences the government tries to create some rest area / urban park in the crowded area. At Lee Tung Street, McGregor Street, Ship Street and Li Chit Street, compare their living environment with the criteria provided in Form A.

8. 5. Interview at least 4 people from 3 groups of people: the shopkeepers, residents of Lee Tung Street or McGregor Street and nearby residents / workers. Find out their views on urban renewal. Take photos, record video clips or sound strips for evidence. (For interviewing shopkeepers of Lee Tung Street and McGregor Street, the sample should be taken from: 4A – odd number of the street, 4B – even number of the street, 4C – 4 samples from odd number and 4 samples from even number)

9. Written report The report should at least cover the following aspects: 1) Describe the general living environment of Wanchai. Why is it like that? Do you like to live there? Why? 2) Why should urban renewal be carried out there? 3) What strategies have been adopted by the Urban Renewal Authority? Which method is more popular at Wanchai? Why? 4) What are the view points of different interest groups toward urban renewal? What is your standpoint? 5) Besides urban renewal, suggest some measures the government adopted to improve the living environment of this district. 6) Choose a plot at Wanchai. Mark the location on the map. Design a project for that site so that the layout of the plan can both preserve the distinctive character of Wanchai and improve the living environment and facilities of Wanchai. Justify the location you choose and explain your plan in detail. Besides written explanation, you may present your idea with the help of diagrams, plans, models and / or drawing. (Hint: Check the land uses and distinctive characteristics of this district.)

Rationale • As stated in the Geography Curriculum, enquiry learning should be developed in the learning and teaching processes. “The prime objective of adopting enquiry learning in geography lessons is to develop students to become active learners and problem-solvers. Through enquiry, students can master geographical concepts and knowledge in a more interesting and authentic way.”

11. 2) Through project learning, students can developgeneric skills: • Collaboration skills Students have to discuss and collaborate with one another to carry out investigation and to solve problems.

12. Communication skills They need to analyse the information in the newspaper.

14. Communication skills • In the oral presentation, they have to present different points of views and express their own feelings. • So, students are trained to listen and read critically, and speak and write fluently.

15. Critical Thinking Skills • Besides the information from the newspaper, we encourage the students to gather information on the site and have cross reference of other sources of opinions on the pros and cons of urban renewal.

17. Critical Thinking Skills They need to distinguish real and stated issues, false and accurate images, and relevant and irrelevant evidences. They need to be aware that the selection and deployment of information is affected by personal perspectives. They are aware of the conflicts of interests among the government, the residents and the shop owners.

20. Creativity • After the field study, they have to design a proposal for urban renewal of a small area of Wanchai. They have to define the urban problems of Wanchai, identify the characteristics of Wanchai and propose a new plan for the Urban Renewal Authority.

21. Some Important Notes of Project Learning • Trust the students Even the lower ability students are interested in the field work. It helps them to build up the sense of achievement. • Consistent supervision The success of the project learning depends on the close monitoring of the progress of each group.

22. The Introduction of Peer Assessment PEER ASSESSMENT FORM Assess other groups and fill in the table below. The marks should be from 1 to 5. “5” is excellent, “3” is the average, “1” is very poor.

23. The Introduction of Peer Assessment Students care about the comments of the peer groups. They can improve from the remarks of their classmates. As all the students know the criteria of assessment, they try to improve their works and learn from the experience of other groups. The reliability and validity of peer assessment are acceptable. The grades / marks are not important as we stress the learning process and the chance of self-improvement.
