ALLEGORY Page: 15/16 Definition: A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, usually about people and society.
Example: We can't all be GiantsA small tree hidden in between two giant redwoods told me of how insignificant it felt. Since I was sitting under it for shade, and being very comfortable at that, I told it." You 're making me very happy byallowing me the benefit of your wonderful sturdy trunk, and the beauty of your lovely leaves that shield me from the suns rays."Tree said "Thank you, but the Redwoods are everyone's favorite they never even notice me."I then told tree the story of how I used to feel as an artist, unable to compete with the great ones. Remembering my days of self-pity until a good friend gave me some wisdom gems to think about. How we all are here for a purpose and if we learn to accept what we are and do our best with it ,we will havegreat satisfaction even if we never rise to the pinnacle of our expectations. We are each unique, and there will always be someone that will need what we have to offer and when they do our purpose is fulfilled even though we may not think so. I told tree that the shade it gave me fulfilled it's purpose along with other factors especially how it kept the Redwoods from being too close together, and the different nutrients it fed the ground, among other things. Before I left, Tree was very happy standing as tall as it could, preening its leaves, and I was very glad to have given it a boost. I thought of a friend who had been very distant lately, and how badly it made me feel. What I told Tree, also applied to me. As long as I fulfilled my purpose I wouldn't worry about how others thought of me, I would just forge ahead and do my best let others deal with their actions, if they so chose. Like Tree,I was doing fine!
The Lottery What does the word lottery mean? The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o’clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 26th, but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o’clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. What do you think the prize for the lottery may be?
Reading When we come to a STOP, copy the question into your notebook under the definition of Allegory and then answer it. I will then have you PAIR and SHARE your answers with a partner. Then I will call on students to share their answers.
DISCUSSION of ALLEGORY • The story illustrates how difficult it is to give up a tradition, even if it operates against the concepts of Western morality. Examples: Drinking the “blood” of Christ. Shooting guns as a sign of respect on Memorial Day. • The story shows how unquestioning we are. We keep on routinely doing things which we know are wrong. (Physical fighting, smoking,....) • The human need for a scapegoat. In every day life, we are always trying to find someone who is responsible. (endless Investigation Commissions) • How delicate family loyalties are. One of our hidden qualities and one which we are most ashamed of- When something horrible happens, our first emotion is often relief that it hasn’t happened to us. • How really brutal human beings are. We are shocked at the brutal killing of one person. But we kill millions for unclear reasons and justifications. • (The war in Viet Nam, Dropping the atomic bomb on the Japanese. And, of course, the Holocaust. By the way, Shirley Jackson once answered that The Lottery was written under the influence of the Holocaust.
