  1. THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE - STRYMON “Ecosystem Based Water Resources Management to Minimize Environmental Impacts from Agriculture Using State-of-the-Art Modeling Tools in Strymonas Basin.” Chalkidis Iraklis Agricultural Engineer, M.Sc LIFE Environment

  2. Specific objectives of the project Use of state-of-art modeling tools Use of optimization methods for sustainable management Dissemination of knowledge and results THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  3. Starting Date: 1st September 2003 End Date: 31st August 2007 Beneficiary: Goulandris Natural History Museum - Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre (ΕΚΒΥ) Partners: Directorate of Land Reclamation of Serres (DEB-S) Development Agency of Serres S.A. (ANESER S.A.) Local Association for the Protection of Lake Kerkini THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  4. Water Districts in Greece according to law 1739/87. 11th

  5. Map1.1 Strymonikos Gulf

  6. TORRENTS AND THEIR SUB-CATCMENTS IN STRYMONAS BASIN THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  7. Yearly increase of the irrigation areas in Strymonas Basin THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  8. Main problems • the loss of water due to the incomplete or damaged irrigation distribution network • b) salinization of the downstream agricultural soils due to the reuse of drainage water with high concentration in nutrients and salts as irrigation water • c) undesirable alterations in the hydroperiod of the ecosystems of Lake Kerkini, due to the continuous sedimentation THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  9. Main problems d) the high concentration of surface waters in nutrients (NO3-N and PO4-P) due to the intensive agricultural practices, which in turn end up in Strymonikos Gulf leading to its eutrophication and e) the intrusion of the sea into Strymonas during irrigation period due to its low discharge THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE LIFE Environment

  10. Methodological approach • Use of state-of-the-art modeling tools and satellite image analysis • Wetland functional evaluation methods • Consultation with stakeholders • Farm management survey at catchment scale • Agro-environmental policy and measures • Assessment of the status and trends of water resources at catchment scale • Water needs for agriculture and wetlands • Impacts of agriculture on water resources and wetlands • Stakeholders’ needs • Cost associated with water services • Potential of agro-environmental policy and measures, in reducing the use of irrigation water and agrochemicals • Optimization through modeling • Deliberation with stakeholders Optimum management plans with respect to water, agriculture and wetlands Dissemination LIFE Environment THE GOULANDRIS NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMGREEK BIOTOPE/WETLAND CENTRE
