The Mandate • The Trans Canada Trail is a non-profit, registered charity organization, whose primary purpose is to raise funds to build a recreational trail that will wind its way through every province and territory in Canada. The Brantford Jerseyville Trail Project • Construction in 1996 • TCTF dedicated $50 000.00 • 1 of 3 Ontario projects in 1996 • To date $2.3 Million has been spent in Ontario • $3.5 Million allocation waiting to be spent on TCT development leading to 2010. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Relay 2000 • Largest trail marketing effort to date • Brought together ocean water from Arctic, Pacific and Atlantic by way of 5 core activities and thousands of participants • By the end of the Relay 7 of 10 Canadians had heard of the TCT = 20 000 000+ • Biggest hurdle, people thought trail complete, and people think of as only trail in Ontario! www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
TCTO • Incorporated in 1992, TCTO is committed to the goal of completing the main trunk of the TCT by 2010. • The main route of the TCT will serve as the spine of the Trillium Trail Network. West of City of Peterborough – proposed TCT. • 52 Gaps exist along the TCT route in Ontario • 1600km to be determined • Many km of suitable trail ready for registration and opening • Due to Ontario’s vastness and topography likely 800km will remain as Temporary Gaps leading to 2010. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Stage 4 - Temporary Road Link This is not a default measure nor road shoulder designation. The TRL suggests there is not a feasible route possibility between today and 2010 and efforts will be turned towards those areas where routing possibilities are available. Continuum Stage 1 • Identification or development of a trail group • While there are 52 gaps in the Trail there are also gaps in trail organization = Regional Management Councils • Municipally aligned, volunteer based, some staffing elements: 42 need to be operationalized • Min. Stage 2 – Route Selection • Southern Ontario – predominantly urban/suburban local or regional municipalities and emerging RMC’s decide • Central and Rural Ontario – predominantly RMC driven with local or county participation (trail master plan dependant) • Northern Ontario – crown assistance – MNR partnership et al. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Stage 3 - Registration • Once route is selected (including road shoulder alignments as trail) 4 pieces of information are critical • 1. Owner authorization • 2. Operator identified • 3. TCT named as additionally insured under stated policy • 4. Mapping detail of the TCT route start to end. • TCTO will provide $50.00 per kilometre registered of TCT to not-for-profit trail org. as an incentive www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Stage 5 – Construction Estimates • Working with trail groups and past trail builders, costing estimates are drafted to assess the feasibility of the corridor becoming a multi-use / shared-use path • TCTO economic impact study includes cost estimates for each gap area (www.tctrail.ca for a free copy) www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Stage 6 – Fundraising • $3.5 Million waiting to be spent prior to 2010 • TCTO committed to seed funding TCT by 10% and bridges at 10% to a maximum of $100 000.00 • A consolidated regional or provincial approach to funding requests for capital development has been successful most recently in British Columbia. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Stage 7 – Construction and Inspection • As mandated, the TCTF has a responsibility to individual and other donors to financially assist in the completion of the TCT. • TCTO as the agent of the Foundation in Ontario will be collecting additional information, such as GPS, pictures, information that can be shared with donors and bring increased awareness to projects. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Construction Goals • 2006-07 302km registered/built = 2506 total • 2007-08 400km registered/built = 2906 total • 2008-09 200km registered/built = 3106 total • To 2010 154km registered/built = 3260 total • The remaining 800km will be Temporary Road Link • Image the $ impact of a 4060km trail! www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07

The 4000km Standard • Impact study recognizes 10 trail types along the route of the TCT • The Ontario TCT standard of experience will be the product of the collaborative effort by Ontarians from Ottawa to Windsor and Niagara on the Lake to Kenora. www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
Fall 2009 • TCT Foundation will be providing trail for the Olympic Torch Relay on the TCT in time for 2010 winter Olympics • Requires as much drive to complete the trail with collaboration and partnerships as is possible • Provides incentive for corporate engagement towards community trail capital support www.ontariotrails.on.ca www.tctrail.ca Rotary London 18/6/07
