Homework? To do or not To do? How much is enough? • Improves recall & understanding • Helps develop study skills • Teaches students that learning can take place anywhere • Fosters responsibility & independence • According to the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA): • K-2: not to exceed 10-20 min. per day • 3-6: study time 30-60 min. per day http://www.yic.gov/elementary/homework.html
Time & Place • Establish a quiet place to work • Kitchen table, bedroom, or elsewhere • Remove distractions • music, television, other siblings playing • Establish a routine • set a time each day • have a snack prepared • play time before or after?
Organization & Materials • Make a list of your family’s homework issues & problems • Set up a homework study calendar • Determine the basic materials needed to complete homework • (grade-level) • Put together a homework study box • Clean out backpacks weekly • Set up assignment folders • Establish a place for your child’s book bag • Assign a place for your child to put his or her homework to be signed
