Outline • This presentation will discuss: - Course Objective 3: The results of close reading and original thinking about the works and themes studied in clear, well-organized writing and articulate discussion - Our selected themes: Overcoming Adversity The Importance of Family Death is Part of the Life Cycle -An explication of Rose de Leon’s “In Our Hearts”
Theme 1: Overcoming Adversity In the poem, In Our Hearts, the author accepts a tough situation and turn it into triumph. She uses the line “Your memory is our keepsake” to symbolize strength and a person who finds a way to come out on top despite failed relationship and a death of a close member depression.
Theme 2: The Importance of Family Rose de Leon’s poem addresses the importance of family. Her whole poem is about a death of a close someone. Rose states in line 9 and 10 that even though he/she passed away the memories will never erase, “Your memory is our keepsake. With which we’ll never part.”
Theme 3: Death is Part of the Life Cycle Leon wrote a poem about death. This theme and the poem connect because Rose talks about the memories she had with him/her and at the end of the poem she accepts the passing. “God has you in his keeping. We have you in our hearts.”
Theory of Literary Criticism Moral Criticism and Dramatic Construction Structuralism and Semiotics To help readers to achieve their objectives, Rose de Leon developed elements of organization and methods for writing effective poetry. Rose used elements like language, rhythm, and harmony. “ Structuralists asserts that, language exists in patterns, certain underlying elements are common to all human experiences.”
Explication of In Our Hearts The poem ends with a peaceful statement: “We have you in our hearts.” In this line it summarizes the whole poem. She is talking about the memories they had and now she is stating how she deals with it. In this way the poet reinforces what the whole was about, memories. This poem dramatizes the conflict between losing someone close and memories. The author starts the first and second line saying we thought of you, which means we thought about the memories we had. Then she continues in the third and fourth line stating we think about you every day. Rose is still talking about the past and memories in the fifth and sixth line. Now she is talking about the present and how she is dealing with it all. “Now all we have is memories and your picture in a frame” (Leon). The rest of the lines she is explain how she will never forget the memories, even though God has kept them, but they still have them in their hearts.
