  3. Key Terms • Anthems – a song of gladness, praise, devotion or patriotism • Bombardments – to attack with bombs, explosive shells, or missiles. To attack persistently • National March – “the Starts and Stripes Forever’ as recognized in the United States Code of Federal Regulations • Symbol - something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object to represent something invisible • “The Star-Spangled Banner” – the national anthem of the United States, written by Francis Scott Key • Under Arms – to carry or be furnished with, or to have attached to person, a weapon or equipment pertaining directly to a weapon, such as a pistol belt or pistol holder

Introduction • National Anthems are usually songs already in a culture that become so popular that people claim them as a symbol for themselves and their nation. • Our National Anthem is “the Star Spangled Banner”, it took congress 117 years to ratify this as our national anthem • It was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key

  5. History of our National Anthem • Francis Scott Key wrote “the Star Spangled Banner” as a result of a mission he was on during the war of 1812 • He was one of the two people assigned to deliver release papers for American prisoners on British ships in the harbor of Baltimore, Maryland. • The British where ready to attack Fort McHenrey and they did not want key and his companions to war the American Soldiers • They complied and then to their boat till dusk. When the bombardment started, the British told them to look at there flag since it would not be their in the morning.

Courtesies to the National Anthem • A national anthem is a symbolof the people, their land, and their institutions. • When saluting during the playing of the National Anthem you are saluting what that it stands for. • Service men and women fallow certain procedures when showing respect to their U.S. anthem and to the anthems of friendly foreign nations.

  7. When You Hear the National Anthem • Outside in Uniform - When you are outside in uniform and you hear the national anthem face the flag (if the flag is not visible, face toward the sound of the music) stand at attention and render a hand salute • Outside in civilian Cloths – when you are outside in civilian cloths and you hear the national anthem playing face the flag (if the flag is not visible, face towards the sound of the music) stand at attention and place your hand over your heart. A male must remove his hat and hold his right hand over his heart. A woman does not remove her hat but must place her hand over her heart. • During indoor Ceremonies – if you are standing indoors and you hear the national anthem, face the flag and stand at attention, if the flag is not visible, face the source of the music or to the front and assume the position of attention. Do not salute unless you are Under Arms. • When in private Vehicle – on military base at the first note of the national anthem the vehicle must come to a complete stop. If the driver is in uniform step out of the vehicle and take the steps of being outside in uniform. If the driver is military but in civilian clothes get out of the car and take the actions of being outside in the civilian clothes. All other occupations sit quietly inside of the vehicle until the last note of the music is played

The National March, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” • This song was composed by Philip Sousa entailed “The Stars and Stripes Forever” is the National March • In late 1896, Sousa and his wife took a vacation to Europe where, while their, he received news that the manager of the band, David Blakely, had suddenly died. • While on his way home from his vacation he was beginning to think about his responsibility of taking over his managers responsibility and he begin to get a rhythm that he could not get rid of, the entire boat ride home it continued. When he got home he turned it into music and it was “The Stars and Stripes Forever” that his band played it at every concert until his death over 25 years later. • “the composition by John Philip Sousa entitled ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ is hereby designated as the national march of the united states of America.” (36 USC Chap 10 Sec. 188)

  9. Conclusion • “The Star-Spangled Banner” the national anthem of the United States, is symbolic of the struggles and success of this country. • “The Stars and Strips Forever” demonstrates the strength and the power of patriotic music in the development of a national spirit.
