  1. The Role of Research in the Development of Mushrooms Sub-sector Fredrick Musieba, Research Scientist, Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute(KIRDI)

  2. Presentation Outline • About KIRDI • Introduction • Possible research areas • Conclusion

  3. KENYA INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE(KIRDI)

  4. Introduction • Mushrooms research in Kenya started in 70s with focus on white button mushroom.

  5. Research effort made this far • Research organizations and affiliated bodies • Public and Private universities • Progressive farmers/Entrepreneurs

  6. Possible research areas • Characterization and domestication of new mushrooms species. • Identification of additional Agaricus species for cultivation and their genetic improvement. • Identification and characterization of bioactive molecules for industrial/medicinal uses.

  7. Possible research areas cont’d • Development of high yielding hybrids to incorporate the desirable traits like fruit size, colour, flavour and texture • Breeding varieties for disease/pest resistance and amenability to processing • Molecular profiling of varieties developed and released.

  8. Possible research areas cont’d • Undertake study to record basic information on identity, biology, behaviour and status of common insect pests of mushrooms • Development of environment friendly composting process • Search for newer and improved casing materials, which may be made into ready to use thin sheets or rolls for easy and uniform application.

  9. Possible research areas cont’d • Isolate microbial stimulants and enzymes for accelerated and improved compost. • Development of compost formulations for different parts of the country keeping in view the cost and availability of raw materials. • Development and improvement in the design of growing houses

  10. Possible research areas cont’d • Use of spent substrate. • Development of technologies (carriers and containers) to prolong the viability, shelf life and ease in bulk transport of the ready-to-use spawn.

  11. Possible research areas cont’d • Increased productivity demands proper post harvest infrastructure to enhance shelf life and marketability. • Develop ready-to-cook recipes, value-addition and product diversification to cover pharmaceutical, cosmetic and fast food industries.

  12. Possible research areas cont’d • Development of expert system (ES) for mushroom cultivation, marketing, forecasting and management of insect-pests and diseases. • Development of data bases of input suppliers, entrepreneurs, farmers, market channels and financial institutions. • Development of interactive website on mushrooms and establishment of Teleconferencing facilities.

  13. Conclusion • To face these challenges, all available expertise and resources in the country as well as outside need to be utilized to make Kenyan mushrooms sub sector competitive. • There is need to build stronger linkages between research organizations, food processing industries, progressive farmers, regulators and the market.
