Enhancing Media Stream Support for Voice-Band Data Optimization

This draft proposes the use of a new SDP attribute, gpmd, to specify optional media format parameters for voice-band data optimization. The draft discusses the need for such parameters and their impact on media stream optimization. It also outlines the current issues and suggests next steps for further development.

  1. SDP attribute for qualifying Media Formats with Generic Parameters(gpmd) draft-rajeshkumar-mmusic-gpmd-01.txt 55th IETF – November 18, 2002 Rajesh Kumar (rkumar@cisco.com) Presented by Flemming Andreasen (fandreas@cisco.com)

  2. Background • Receiver of audio media stream can benefit from knowing that media stream is voice band data. It should not be a requirement to know this though (optimization). • Need to indicate that media stream is for voice-band data. • Special case of a more general issue: • Want to be able to define new media format parameters that can apply to existing MIME types for media formats. • Support for such parameters must be optional - a hint. • Lack of receiver support for these parameters should not render the media received useless - rather an optimization. • If receiver support is important, offer/answer can be used to determine if other side supports it and hence whether sender side optimization can be used.

  3. Possible Solutions • fmtp parameters: Parameters must be defined up front, so does not work here. • SDP attributes: No standard way of specifying these on a per media format basis (only per media stream). • gpmd: New SDP attribute that defines a way of specifying new optional media format parameters on a per media format basis. • Example: m=audio 3456 RTP/AVP 0 15 98 a=rtpmap:98 PCMU/8000 a=gpmd:98 vbd=yes

  4. Current Issues • gpmd attribute definition too open-ended right now: • Need to narrow down scope and clearly specify what constitutes appropriate use of gpmd (and what does not). • Need to specify Offer/Answer interactions. • Registration procedures for new gpmd parameters: • Specification Required, Designated expert, … ?

  5. Next Steps • Update draft • Any further comments or issues ? • Status in WG ?
