How the GammaPix System Works GammaPix GammaPix Layers of detection • City CCTV security cameras • Police smartphones • Police/fire/EMS vehicles with tablets & laptops • Private CCTV cameras • Civilian/consumer smartphones • GammaPix multi-sensor nodes • Fuse dedicated detectors into network Detectors networked • Cell network and micro-cells • Wi-Fi • Radio links Command Centre Web Application • Data mapping and alarms • Mobile command centres • Control of police mobile devices • Anomaly detection GammaPix Training Simulator • Live, real-world training with mobile devices and virtual sources
GammaPix GammaPix Validation • $7 million in contracts and licenses from DHS, DARPA and other US government agencies • Successfully tested at national and international laboratories • Patents issued worldwide • DHS SAFETY Act Developmental Testing and Engineering Designation as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) • R&D 100 award in 2012 • Licensed for use in medical research
Summary of current performance* GammaPix • GammaPix Pro smartphone apps can detect 20 μSv/hr within ~15 sec • GammaPix running continuously on exposure-optimised cameras with covered lens can detect 0.5 μSv/hr in <2 min • GammaPix running on security video cameras can detect~50 to 150 μSv/hr within ~30 sec • GammaPix detects X-rays, gamma rays, beta particles, and alpha particles * Exact performance varies from model to model, depending on the image sensor, electronics, and firmware. Light level impacts sensitivity for security camera applications.
Historical Performance of GammaPix 2007-2018 GammaPix ( μSv/hr ) 100 Plot showing the improvement in GammaPix sensitivity since 2007. The current minimum detectable exposure rate with 2-minute integrations is 0.5 μSv/ hr , an enhancement by a factor of more than 200 during the last 11 years. 10 I3 Developmental Testing Partner Testing Oak Ridge Nat’l Lab Oak Ridge Nat’l Lab US Gov’t Lab European Lab 1
Recent Advances GammaPix • Improvements in sensitivity • Use of single board computers (e.g., Raspberry Pi) to drive down cost and enhance sensitivity • Incorporation of multitude of sensors into data stream • Construction of sensor-agnostic, cyber secure/cyber resilient framework • High-level analytics to assess data quality • Order of magnitude improvement in ability to function in complex visual environments (lit scenes, moving objects, complex background) • Improved data query and visualisation tools
Upcoming enhancements & developments GammaPix • Incorporation of energy-determination algorithms into operational code base to measure approximate gamma ray energy • Assessment of ability to differentiate between gamma/X-ray detections and beta/muon interactions • Quantify sensitivity to secondary beta particles/X-rays produced by alpha interactions with outer case of device • Advances to triangulation and localisation algorithms • Integration of small, inexpensive multi-threat detectors with GammaPix single board computer nodes (e.g., Chem, Bio, Nuclear, Explosive) • Integration of flexible communications packages (radio, LiFi, etc.) • Vehicle mounted directional detector with visual context
