Lascaux Cave Paintings The cave paintings are among the world’s greatest prehistoric treasures. The location of the paintings deep within the cave, protected from the elements for thousands of years. The paintings discovery in 1940 led their exposure to people and environmental factors that threatened to permanently harm them. For this reason, the French government closed the cavern to the public in 1963.
