The IB in the United States • Established in the US in 1977, the IB can now be found in 1,308 schools, 92% of which are public. • 753 Diploma Programmes • 448 Middle Years Programmes • 292 Primary Years Programme
Three Programs The Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3-12 started in 1997 The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11-16 started in 1994 The Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19 started in 1968 with first examinations in 1970
Primary Years Programme For students aged 3–12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
Middle Years Programme For students aged 11–16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, becoming critical and reflective thinkers.
The Diploma Programme A rigorous pre-university course of studies that leads to examinations. Developed for highly motivated secondary school students. Two-year curriculum Based on a program of no single country
Diploma Programme For students aged 16–19, is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and life beyond.
Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts. Students study concurrently: • three subjects at higher level (240 hours each). • three subjects at standard level(150 hours each). • all three parts of the core. The IB Learner Profile and the core are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme. Page 16

Authorization • Authorization is a 4 part process: • Intent to Seek Authorization (already completed) • Application Part A – primarily feasibility information due no later than October 1, 2009 • Application Part B – curriculum to be taught during the DP years due no later than April 1, 2010 • Site Visit – Fall of 2010
