Why did GA state officials want population growth? More population = greater representation in the U. S. Congress New settlers would turn forests into farms=Economic growth
How was growth stimulated? Land!! 1. State Headright System: 200 acres to head of household; 50 additional acres for each member of the family (1000 max.) . 2. Land Lottery: replacesheadright system; names placed in barrels; had to be 21 and have lived in GA for a year. Valuable land given away in smaller amounts (in areas where gold found—40 acres), poorer land given away in larger amounts (pine barrens of Coastal Plain—490 acres = 40 acres

Railroads & Steamboats: better transportation made cotton business more profitable; cotton could be grown inland and still be transported to market Cotton gin: sped up cotton production making it more profitable; inventor: Eli Whitney W & A Railroad was state-owned R. R. line built in GA; Town at railroads endpoint named Terminus, later Marthasville, finally Atlanta
How was the location of the state capital affected by GA’s growth? As the population grew inland, GA’s capital was moved further inland—from Savannah to Augusta, then Louisville (state created town), Milledgeville, Atlanta (“SALMA”)
