Casa Temescal OMWD Demonstration Garden Presented by: Torey Pratt, Tory Monigold & Jason Duran
Project Statement Welcome to Casa Temescal, a residential demonstration garden where beauty and sophistication meet sustainability. Taken from the Diegueño word “Temescal,” meaning “sacred place,” we hope to create a landscape that introduces a paradigm shift in the way people think about and appreciate the residential garden. Visitors will be inspired by landscape design elements that promote resource conservation and healthy ecosystems without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the Southern California lifestyle and outdoor living. Examples of sustainable outdoor living will include rainwater harvesting, edible gardening, the use of water-wise plants, recycled and regenerative building materials, and creating and fostering habitat for local wildlife. Educational signage will provide visitors with tips and information on how various attractive aspects of the sustainable landscape can be easily duplicated in their own home environment. In addition to landscape sustainability, Casa Temescal will showcase the installations of local artists throughout the garden. Turning the numerous utility boxes into an asset rather than a liability, the boxes can serve as “canvases” to portray themes of cultural and ecological significance. The extra layers of artistic symbolism and education in the garden will connect the community to the essence of sustainable living. Casa Temescal will teach visitors that not only does the residential landscape have the potential to be visually and aesthetically pleasing, but also that it can be thought of as a sacred place that is worthy of nurturing for generations to come.
