Newspeak Intro to 1984
Read “The Party and Language: Newspeak” • What is the purpose of Newspeak? List it or highlight it on your handout. • At the very end of his description of the B Vocabulary (see page 309), Orwell explains the purpose of Newspeak. What does he say? (This is also my favorite phrase in Newspeak, although the meaning is sinister…)
Your Turn to Translate! • Read the description of Vocabularies A, B, and C according to Newspeak. • What do each of these phrases mean in “Oldspeak” (what we recognize as modern English)? • Uncold • Doublepluscold • Unlight • Doubleplusundark
Translate… in reverse! • If you worked at the ministry and were in charge of rewriting language, how would you translate each of the following (hint: look for the part of speech and then work from the grammar rules listed on the handout): • School and learn • Walk and feet • High and low (Hint: Orwell explains that the Ministry would have chosen one word to use while excluding the other: They would use “un” to create the opposite. Which word would you choose to keep?) • **Challenge: Can you use these in sentences??
