Just imagine… You are on your way to class, and your friend asks you about the movie you saw last night (Finding Nemo). Your friend doesn't have time to hear about the whole two hours of the movie, but you can tell your friend in a few sentences what the movie is about. What would you tell her?
You just told your friend the main idea of the movie! YOU JUST TOLD YOUR FRIEND THE MAIN IDEA OF THE MOVIE!
So what is the main idea? The main idea of a paragraph is what all the sentences are about (or in a movie, what all the scenes in the movie were about). It’s the most important point in the passage It explains what the whole passage is about
How can you find the main idea? Ask yourself: WHO or WHAT is the story about? WHY did the author write it?
For short readings:Look at the topic sentence Topic sentence: Felipe loves to play soccer. Main Idea: Felipe loves to play soccer. Felipe loves to play soccer. He is not only on his community soccer team, but also on the Muchin soccer team. Felipe has played soccer ever since he was young. He dreams of one day becoming a pro soccer player and maybe even coaching soccer teams after he retires.
