Keys to a Successful Hybrid Deployment Tips and Tricks from the Field
About me… • Cloud Solutions Architect with Planet Technologies • http://www.go-planet.com • Primary focus in State & Local Government and Education • 2011 Microsoft Community Contributor • Blog: • http://jorgerdiaz.wordpress.com • Twitter: @PlanetJorge
Today’s Agenda • Proper planning is the key to success • Understanding critical key components • Setting Expectations • Impacts of AD FS • Changes to UPN’s • New Features included in ADFS Rollup 1 • Server Deployment Scenarios • Different strokes for different folks • Exchange Federation • It can be tricky, watch your step! • PowerShell is your Friend! • Automating tasks
Planning • What costs $1 now, costs $10 in a week and $1,000 in a month! • Take the time to plan upfront, some key decision points are • Who is responsible for each various task • Upgrading Workstations with supported versions of Office • Who takes support calls during the migration • How is information shared • Set regular meetings with the various leads for each task • Pilot, Pilot, Pilot! • Pick 100 or less users ranging from power users to n00bs
Impacts of AD FS • UPN – User Principal Name • This UPN must be a publicly routable namespace • Domain.local will not work • This doesn’t require a redesign or renaming of your domain! • Adding alternative UPN’s is a simple process • Automating the update of users UPN is scriptable • http://mikecrowley.wordpress.com/2010/12/14/script-for-missing-upns/ • Application dependencies have to be taken into consideration • Other SSO applications such as Oracle can require modifications/updates so plan carefully.
Server Deployment Scenarios • Different requirements for different scenarios • Exchange 2003 on-premises requires additional Hybrid Server roles • Mailbox role must be installed • Free/Busy must be migrated • Exchange PF references must be updated • Child domain causes lookup failures from 2003 to cloud, patch available • Hybrid server can be Hybrid serverS • CAS server configuration must match • When deploying with 2003 servers the free/busy replica can only reside on one 2010 public folder instance
Exchange Federation • This is the most critical (and difficult) phase, take your time • The Exchange Deployment Assistant is an excellent resource, use it!! • Test each step as you go through, don’t move forward until it works 100% as expected • Watch the section about creating the Organizational relationships, there are pieces missing! • User PowerShell to remotely configure the TargetSharingEPR in the Cloud Organizational Relationship • Keep an eye/ear out for Exchange 2010 SP2, one of its main goals is to reduce the complexity of configuring exchange federation, via introduction of the hybrid configuration wizard
PowerShell • Microsoft unlocks a large number of Exchange CmdLets for use with Office 365 • Tasks can require various modules within PowerShell • MSOL commands require the MSOnline Module • Set-ImmutableID requires the PSSnapin Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.E2010 • PowerShell makes repetitive tasks easy • Batch migration scripts run from Windows PowerShell 2.0
