What is the NTIS Database? • The NTIS Database is the main resource for accessing the latest research sponsored by the United States and select foreign governments • Containing over 2.0 million bibliographic records. • Contents include research reports, computer products, software, video cassettes, audio cassettes and more. The complete electronic file dates back to 1964. • On average, NTIS has added over 60,000 new records per year to the Database over the past ten years. Most records include abstracts.
Who Should Access the NTIS Database and Why? Use the database to: • Stay alert of the latest government sponsored research • Access the subject specific information you need when you need it most • Retrieve information that is difficult to find from any other source • Identify valuable research reports, computer products, video cassettes, audio cassettes, and software.

Searching NTIS on Quick Search When using Quick search, the NTIS fields on the list are available through the “search in” drop down menu. These fields include the country originally filling the report, NTIS accession number and report number.
Searching NTIS in Quick Search NTIS search fields are available through Quick search i.e. contract number, country of origin etc. You can also search for specific authors. Affiliations or NTIS controlled terms by using the indexes provided.
Example NTIS has unique numbers for reports. If you the report number, you can search it by selecting the “report number’ field from the drop down menu resulting in 1 document as shown below.
Refining your search using facets Use the facets on the right hand side of the screen to discover related subjects using the controlled vocabulary facet and classification codes.
Detailed record Clicking on any of the hyperlinked fields in the ‘Detailed’ record will create a new search on these terms. Use these links to expand your search on a Specific Author, Controlled and Uncontrolled terms and Classification codes
Search History The newly added searches are saved in your search history for the duration of your active session You can combine searches by using the combine Previous searches option in the search history page
Searching NTIS on Expert Search Additional NTIS fields are Available through command Language Searching in Expert search. These fields include notes, and availability.
