How is tone described? • *Tone is often described by adjectives, but often descriptions aren’t enough • *The tone of a story can change constantly • *Tone can be a result of allusion, diction, figurative language, imagery, irony, symbols, syntax; the possibilities are endless!!
Never fear! Here are some tips that will help you spot tone: • *Imagine a scene from the story as a scene from a movie. • -What kind of music would be playing? *Because writers use words to describe tone, pay attention to the descriptions in the story. -A story with a dark tone will have more negative descriptions. -A story with a suspenseful, adventurous tone will have brief sentences and matter-of-fact descriptions. -A sad story may have long, detailed, sentimental descriptions.
