Did you know? • The rate of increase in funding for Iowa schools over the last three years has been the lowest in the 40-year history of the school aid formula. • Whereas Iowa’s commitment to fund education (as a percentage of per capita income spent on state and local government) was as high as 8th in the nation in the late 80s, funding per student in Iowa has more recently plummeted to 31st • Iowa invests nearly $1,000 less per student than the average of other states in the nation. The funding gap is widening. • The performance of Iowa students has remained stable, while the performance of students has increased in many other state that have made significant investments in education. • Because of state law, Iowa school districts are required to make final budgetary decisions in the month of March. Until the Iowa Legislature acts, schools must assume the worst, planning for the potential of reducing staff and cutting programs. Unnecessary worst-case scenario planning distracts school leaders from focus on the ultimate objective of student achievement.
