  2. Keys To Successful Inspection • Quantification • Location • Description • Dates

  3. Quantification of Defects • If it can be measured, then it shall • Record in inspection report: • Measurements to monitor any change • How measurements were made

  4. Location of Defects • Report locations of defects • Allows other inspectors to monitor defects on next inspection • The severity of defect can depend on location

  5. Description of Defects • Justification of the condition state or NBI code • Should indicate type of defect and severity • Use language from the inspection manual

  6. Dating of Inspection Notes • Date inspection notes • Allows for determination of when defect was first noted • Allows to see how defect is changing over time

  7. Example of Proper Documentation [2009] South fascia girder has 10LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment Description Location Date Quantity

  8. Example of Proper Documentation [2010] No change from 2009 note [2009] South fascia girder has 10LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment OR [2009-2010] South fascia girder has 10LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment

  9. Example of Proper Documentation [2011] South fascia girder has 15LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment [2010] No change from 2009 note [2009] South fascia girder has 10LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment OR [2011] South fascia girder has 15LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment [2009-2010] South fascia girder has 10LF of freckling rust starting at west abutment

  10. When To Take A Note • Any element in a condition state of 2, 3, 4 or 5 • Any NBI in a 5 or less • Date or note should be updated every year inspection is performed

  11. Examples • Acceptable: The entire quantity is in condition state 1, so no defects means no notes are necessary

  12. Examples • Unacceptable: Quantity is in CS2, and is missing description and date.

  13. Examples • Acceptable: Should consider keeping original dates to track change over time

  14. Examples • Unacceptable: Quantity is in CS4 and properly dated. However notes do not justify the condition state.

  15. Photos • At a minimum two photos in the bridge file • Roadway view, profile view • Also recommend for: • NBIs less than 5 • Condition States greater than CS2

  16. Sketches • Provide quick and easy way to capture inspection data • Can be updated over time to reflect changes • Recommend for: • NBIs less than 5 • Condition States greater than CS2
