Electric Vehicle Trends – The Malaysia Experience By Dato’ Sri Hj Syed Zainal Abidin
Declaration at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change summit, Copenhagen Denmark
The Driving Need For Electric Vehicles Many countries in the World are supporting the EV Program. Environmental Benefits - Carbon footprint reduction - Low emission (hybrid), zero emission (EV) - Low noise emission Reduce fuel subsidy expenditure (Malaysia) 1 5 Lower Operating Cost 2 4 More Reliability Electric motors have very few moving parts - reduced maintenance requirements 3 Reduce dependency on fossil fuel reserve -High fuel economy
Electric Vehicle Challenge Range anxiety Need for charging infrastructure • Life style adjustment • Adequate number of convenience charging station • Establishment of ERT • On board range & charging location indicator • Ratio to vehicle, location & quantity, distance to poles • Set up & maintenance responsibility • Method and rate for usage charges • GRID capacity EV Challenge Battery cost/life Charging time • BMS strategy for optimum lifespan • Secondary usage for automotive EOL battery (80% SOH) domestic power storage? • Battery lease program • Government assistance • Fast charging versus battery lifespan • Grid capacity Customer awareness Experienced test center availability • Exhibition • Newsletter • FTV • Local test center development • Oversea testing facility
The New Mass-Market Electric Vehicles • Mass market electric vehicles have arrived - Nissan, GM, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford • Why buy them? • Cost Saving: Reduce fuel bills from 16 cents a mile to 3 cents a mile • Performance: Excellent acceleration with constant torque • Sustainability: Less pollution, reduce dependence on oil • Ideal commuter car
The EV Industry is Expected to Grow Rapidly • There has been a breakthrough in battery technology • Lithium ion technology is driving this new industry • Cost of battery: substantial reduction past 10 years • Lifetime: 8 year, 100,000 mile warranties EV Industry is Technology Driven vs Government Driven Nissan Leaf Chevy Volt • The mass market EV industry started December, 2010 • Consumer demand has been strong • All major auto makers are launching EV’s
Basic concept of Electric Vehicle. Electronic control management system Energy storage Inverter DC Voltage AC Voltage Traction motor/generator
Comparison engine vs. Traction motor efficiency Why traction motor far superior? Internal combustion engine efficiency Traction motor propulsion efficiency With efficiency measured from electric power in to shaft power out With efficiency measured from fuel power in to shaft power out Waste heat Waste heat Usable energy Usable energy >90% <35% <10% >65%
Electric Motor Reasons for Electric Motor: High performance & Torque Low maintenance Less weight Less child part components
Customer Point of View Where can I charge my vehicle and how far will it go?
Malaysian daily commute In Malaysia, at weekdays the owners of D&E travel on average further then others. At weekends owners of C travel more then others. Hybrid owners are those who are traveling long distances most frequently (at weekdays and weekends). Q2 On average, how many km do you think you drive in a typical average day? (Trimmed mean 5%) Q3 How many times a month do you travel long distances of over 100 km? Average (trimmed mean 5%) Base : Malaysia n=358, A&B n=115, C n=76, D&E n=59, MPV n=51, SUV n=29, Hybrid n=28 source: Frost & Sullivan
Customer feedback – Study in Japan Positive Makes me feel special contributing to global environment activity Great acceleration No stress when climbing slope Quiet and smooth without vibration therefore comfortable I don’t have to go to the gasoline station Negative Driving range less than what I expected. Don’t know if the vehicle is “OFF”. Pedestrian will not notice due to the quietness of the vehicle. Charging station availability for daily use.
Differences between EV and conventional From the consumer point of view. * May also depends on air conditioning system.
