It means you need to study poetry from the AQA anthology ‘Moon on the Tides’ You will study 15 poems There will be 1 question on 2 poems You will need to compare the poems You will have 45 minutes 36 marks There will be 1 question on an unseen poem 30 minutes and 18 marks You will sit this exam at the end of year 11. What does that mean?

Brainstorm as many poetic techniques that you can think of and describe intended effect on reader. 22nd September 2014- Starter Meter: The number of feet in a line (the beat) Metaphor: comparison between two unlike things Alliteration: repetition of consonant sounds Assonance: repetition of vowel sounds Enjambment: the running on of lines Simile: comparison using like or as Sestet: a 6 line stanza Sibilance: repetition of ‘s’, ‘z’, soft ‘c’ sounds
Poem 1: Poem 2: Introduction (focus on key words and perspective/ ideas of poet) What is the poem about? Whose perspective is the poem written from/who is the poetic voice? How does the poetic voice appear to be feeling? Comparison Table:Light Brigade v Bayonet
Poem 1: Poem 2: (techniques including imagery) What techniques does the poet use? Just list them at this stage, but highlight them on your annotated poem. Language comparison
Poem 1: Poem 2: (arrangement and endings) Can you identify the poem’s form? Is it a sonnet, ode, ballad, ghazal, blank verse….. Is there anything that strikes you about the way the poem looks? Consider line endings, rhyme scheme etc… Form and Structure comparison
Poem 1: Poem 2: (focus on key words and ideas/message of poem) What is the poet’s overall message? Why and for whom do you think he/she wrote it? What effect did he/she want it to have? Conclusion
The poems, Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson and Bayonet Charge by Hughes both deal with the idea of warfare in the form of a ‘charge’ on the battle field. The poetic voices in each of the poems however, are very different. Whilst Tennyson’s poem is from the point of view of a third party, removed poetic voice who looks back on the event as a moment in history, the poetic voice in Hughes’ Bayonet Charge is quite conversely, that of one of the soldiers and what he is experiencing on the battleground as it is happening. You will need to leave your folders with both workbooks filled in for me to mark. You can take home your comparison table, and some sheets of lined paper so that you can finish your four paragraphs comparing the two poems. You may also take your anthologies with the annotated poems. Today’s power point is attached to the homework on the system. Homework Hand In
