Ideologies • Social Darwinism (Survival of fittest): Natural selection/ survival of the fittest; • It justified the monopolies or big businesses and the existence of poverty; economists found this as a way to justify the doctrine of laissez faire. • Laissez Faire: French for “Allow to do”. Doctrine stating that the government should not regulate or interfere with big business. • Advocated government protection of the rights of management against labor and called for high tariffs.
Government Policy • Horatio Ager’s Rages to Riches” Stories: Person rises from poverty to wealth; • Common themes present in Fairy Tales and Roman tragedies. • High Tariffs: Protect our infant industry and would try to protect our big businesses.
Changes to society as a result of Big Business • Rise in the Standard of living with new products for many Americans • The Harnesssing of electricity and the invention of the typewriter and telephone provided new opportunities for women in the workplace and new conveniences in the home.
Changes to society as a result of Big Business • Deflation and mass production lowered the prices of goods. • Americans, mostly farmers and factory workers, did not enjoy this improved standard of living because of low prices for their crops and low wages for their labor.
