Ideologies • Social Darwinism (Survival of fittest): Natural selection/ survival of the fittest; • It justified the monopolies or big businesses and the existence of poverty; economists found this as a way to justify the doctrine of laissez faire. • Laissez Faire: French for “Allow to do”. Doctrine stating that the government should not regulate or interfere with big business. • Advocated government protection of the rights of management against labor and called for high tariffs.

  3. Government Policy • Horatio Ager’s Rages to Riches” Stories: Person rises from poverty to wealth; • Common themes present in Fairy Tales and Roman tragedies. • High Tariffs: Protect our infant industry and would try to protect our big businesses.

  4. Changes to society as a result of Big Business • Rise in the Standard of living with new products for many Americans • The Harnesssing of electricity and the invention of the typewriter and telephone provided new opportunities for women in the workplace and new conveniences in the home.

  5. Changes to society as a result of Big Business • Deflation and mass production lowered the prices of goods. • Americans, mostly farmers and factory workers, did not enjoy this improved standard of living because of low prices for their crops and low wages for their labor.
