Food and Drink Federation • FDF is the voice of the UK Food and Drink Manufacturing Industry. • The Food and Drink Manufacturing Industry: • is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector • has sales worth more than £65 billion • directly employs some 500,000 people • buys two-thirds of all UK’s agricultural produce • exports around £9 billion of food and drink products

Guiding Principles • To comply with all relevant legislation and to take voluntary initiatives to progress towards long term sustainability • To encourage dialogue between industry, government, public interest groups and others to promote the development of sound policy on sustainable food production and consumption
Guiding Principles • To work with suppliers and other business partners in the food supply chain to maintain high environmental standards and to work towards the broader objective of long term sustainability including encouragement and dissemination of best practice • To integrate sustainability considerations, where practicable, into all aspects of business
KPI’s • Indicators should be: • Objective, not subjective • Easy to measure and comprehend • Capable of audit/verification • Meaningful both to industry and stakeholders • Achievable but at the same time contain an element of aspiration • Calculated wherever possible by utilising data already collected by businesses for existing purposes
Social progress Core KPIs • % of workforce covered by a regularly updated individual training plan • Community investment/year as % of pre-tax profits • Notifiable injuries/100,000 employees/year
Social progress Additional KPIs • % of suppliers which follow a recognised ethical trading code of practice • % of employees categorised by age band and by occupational band • % of employees with disabilities • % of employees from ethnic minorities • % of management who are women • Company contributions to social welfare beyond legal requirements as a % of payroll
Protection of the environment Core KPIs • BOD/COD discharged/tonne of product/year • Total CO2 equivalent emissions/tonne of product/year from i) manufacturing and ii) distribution • Total waste/tonne of product/year • % of total waste recovered/year
Protection of the environment Additional KPIs • % of manufacturing operations with an externally certified EMS (Environmental Management System) • Annual mass of other significant emissions to air by type/tonne of product/year
Prudent use of natural resources Core KPIs • Total raw materials/tonne of product/year • Total water consumption/tonne of product/year • Total packaging/tonne of product/year • Total energy use in manufacturing/tonne of product/year
Prudent use of natural resources Additional KPIs • % of packaging used which is of recycled origin • Total energy use in distribution/tonne of product/year • % of energy from renewable sources • % of energy from ‘good quality’ CHP schemes • % of suppliers which follow a recognised sustainable trading code of practice
Economic growth & employment Core KPIs • Pre-tax profits/employee/year • Capital invested/employee • Average earnings/employee/year • Production tonnage output/employee/year
