GENERAL OVERVIEW • The Diarizos river valley covers about 260 km2 in SW Cyprus and extends along approx. 33 km from headquarters to sea • Minimum elevation is 0 m and maximum elevation is 1800 m. • Bunding box [lat/long of upper left (lat: 458,978.47, long: 3,872,690.42) and lower right (lat: 488,606.67, long: 3,838,161.32) corner minimally The Dhiarizos River Basin consists of seven sub catchments

Defining water management targets • Issues as defined from the Stakeholder participation Process: • Water is very scarce, drought in most years. Quantity of water is more of a problem than quality. • Water export outside the watershed is a problem for local communities as they feel they have insufficient water to meet their needs. • Local Community stakeholders expressed the opinion that the price of water is too high while the WDD expressed the opinion that the price of water should be increased. • Surface and groundwater depletion due to unsustainable uses, illegal drilling or boreholes. • Arminou Dam is said by several stakeholders to be too small to meet the water needs
Optimization scenarios • Technology options utilised during optimisation include: • Application of water conserving crops • Training • Small pumps • Desalination • Reservoir • Criteria and Constraints • Cost / benefit ratio • Reliability of supply
In general several alternative options were identified which exhibited improved cost/benefit or reliability of supply. The construction of a small dam at Souskiou is found to have several benefits (reduced outflow to sea, improved reliability of supply and improved cost/benefit ratio) Switching to less water intensive crops does not necessarily lead to improved cost/benefit ratios Optimisation Results
Issues defined by Stakeholders: Responsibility, accountability and competence of governing institutions are not clearly defined. Local communities feel they are not adequately represented at the decision making level. Institutional control and enforcement needs to be improved Information to public is limited. Few awareness campaigns. Decisions and rationale behind decisions is inaccessible to local communities General Conclusions
