Types of Shoes • Estimate to about 20,000 different kinds and styles. • Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were the first people known to make sandals. • A few decades later wrappings, also called “coverings”, were introduced.
-Ancient Egyptian sandals made from wood. - Clay Roman sandals -Modern day shoes.
The Reason for Inventing Shoes • Anthropologists believe they were worn about 40,000 years ago. • Most of the time, they were used not for status, but to protect feet from rough grounds and sharp objects.
Egyptians drew hieroglyphics into the walls and detailed peoples feet with shoes. Hieroglyphics- A form of writing, as used in ancient Egypt, in which pictures or symbols are used to represent objects, concepts, or sounds.
Shoes in the 1800’s • Jan Matzeliger of Massachusetts in 1882 invented the “Shoe Lasting Machine”. She was known as, “Matzeliger the Shoemaker.” • Getting closer to modern times, in the 1800’s shoes became big.
Conclusion • From looking through the thousands of centuries, just imagine how much shoes have been improved and changed. Think of how before the invention, people walked without shoes and a sole for the pads of their feet. Now they really got down and dirty!
