Project Hub(s) Two hubs identified for the Project: • Kandy: Peradeniya Teaching Hospital • Colombo: Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM)
Demonstration Phase • Preliminary needs assessment • Early implementation sites identified • Testing of eLearning Modules in different delivery modes • eHealth system installed in seven sites
Priority Topics for Demo Phase • Emergency and Disaster Planning and Management • Infectious Disease Control (including blood safety) • Non-communicable Diseases
Working Teams • Curriculum Development Team: Faculty of Medicine, Colombo; GW Hospital Clinicians; ISHED; and SLMA • eLearning Design and Development Team: Peradeniya University IT Center; ISHED; WHO-Colombo/SEARO • Project Advisory Team: WR-Colombo; WHO/ MoH Sr. Advisor; DoH Officials; ISHED Director
Selected Accomplishments • Initial needs assessment completed • Priority topics for eLearning identified • Project teams and D-groups established • eLearning platforms developed and tested • System installation completed in 07 sites • Controlled trial of three topics using different delivery modes
Moving Forward:Development Phase • Strengthening of infrastructure and dedicated systems installation • Assessment of ICT-based health sector projects and IT infrastructure needs • Detailed CPD analyses from SLMA member- and other surveys • Plan for maintenance, management and sustainability of content and infrastructure
Scalability • To be phased in gradually to all government healthcare facilities • Develop to include VC, eDiagnostics and other multimedia applications
Bridging the Gap • Gives healthcare workers and patients access to educational and clinical services • Helps overcome infrastructure constraints in the “last mile” by using WS technology • All information to be made available in local languages: Sinhalese and Tamil
Challenges (or opportunities) • Infrastructure: establishment and maintenance • Capacity building: technicians and users (doctors/nurses/pharmacists) • Overcoming resistance from doctors • Finding local expertise to develop and adapt content
Challenges (or opportunities) (2) • #1 Challenge: changing mindsets and aversion to technology • Unexpected challenge: installation in conflict areas
