Whyebooks in academiclibraries? • Studentsareused to digital informationand portable devices • The most important academicpublishersaredigitizingtheirbooks • Expansion of accessavailability(24x7, unlimitedusers, etc.) • In theory: • New editionseasier to updatethanprintbooks • Attractivefeatures: multimedia content, links to related data, etc. • Maybeebooksaremoresuitable for undergraduatesthan e-journals?

E-booksat CBUC/CSUC: consortialpurchases Started in 2004: 1.200 titlesfromNetLibrary (now in EBSCO eBookCollection) Nowadays > 17.500 ebooks • Springerebooks, including LNCS = 12.000 titles • Elsevierebooks, includingtextbooks = nearly 1.500 titles • Wileyebooks = nearly 400 titles • Othersare: Ebrary/E-Libro, MyiLibrary, Gale • Recent acquisition • Ebooks UPC: 150 titles(in Catalan, Spanish, English) But ... aretheyused? areusers/librarieshappy?
