  1. Give Your Full StrengthJoshua 8 Dr. Joseph Chang 8/11/2013 BOLGPC

  2. 1Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. (Josh 8:1)

  3. I. God’s “more usual” tactics • (1). The Inferior against the Mighty (Isarelvs Egypt) • 7He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. (Exod 14:7) • (2). The few against the Many (Gideon vs the eastern people) • 12The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore. (Judg 7:12)

  4. This battle is very different • (1). It is all Israelites against a small city of Ai. • 25Twelve thousand men and women fell that day--all the people of Ai. (Josh 8:25)

  5. Joshua 8:1-3 • 1Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. 2You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city." 3So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night.

  6. Joshua 8:4-7 • 4with these orders: "Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don't go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. 5I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. 6They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, 'They are running away from us as they did before.' So when we flee from them, 7you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The LORD your God will give it into your hand.

  7. Joshua 8:8-10 • 8When you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the LORD has commanded. See to it; you have my orders." 9Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai--but Joshua spent that night with the people. 10Early the next morning Joshua mustered his men, and he and the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai.

  8. Joshua 8:11-13 • 11The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13They had the soldiers take up their positions--all those in the camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley. (Josh 8:1-13)

  9. II. This battle is very different • (1). It is all Israelites against a small city of Ai. • 25Twelve thousand men and women fell that day--all the people of Ai. (Josh 8:25) • (2).Even deception is used in the battle. • 30,000 best fighting men hiding behind the city. • Another 5,000 ambushed between Bethel and Ai (8:12).

  10. God wants us to • Give it our full strength.

  11. III. God’s people has fatal weaknesses • We are weak when the enemy is strong; we are strong when the enemy is weak. • (1). When they saw the giants in the land of Canaan, the spies said, • “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." (Num 13:32-33)

  12. III. God’s people has fatal weaknesses • We are weak when the enemy is strong; we are strong when the enemy is weak. • (2). When the city is small, there is no need to weary our mighty warriors, • 3When they returned to Joshua, they said, "Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there." (Josh 7:3)

  13. “We are weak when the enemy is strong” • God took 40 years to cure that. • “We are strong when the enemy is weak.” • God used this battle of Ai to correct this mind set.

  14. "I came to cut Park Chung-Hee's throat." • 1/19/1968

  15. "I came to cut Park Chung-Hee's throat."

  16. Kim Shin-Jo as a pastor

  17. Korea’s New President Park Geun-hye

  18. IV. What do you think God was doing? • Of the 31 commandos, only 2 survived. • One returned to N. Korea and became a general at the end. • Kim Shin-Jo became a general in God’s kingdom. • Do you think they were doing it with their full strength?

  19. IV. What do you think God was doing? • 13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?" 14"Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord have for his servant?" 15The commander of the Lord's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so. (Josh 5:13-15)

  20. How many angels does God have? • Thousands of thousands and myriads of myriads (Rev. 5:11) • 103 x 103 x 104 x 104 x =1014 • God does things with His full strength, with His full attention. • We always fail in small easy things. • Can we easily drive out a small demon?

  21. What do you think God want us to be? • 遇強, 我們要憑信心靠主得勝, 遇弱, 我們要全力以赴, 靠主得勝. • We overcome the enemy with our faith in God when the enemy is strong; we overcome the enemy with our full strength from God when the enemy is weak.

  22. Conclusion • 1.In our lives, when and on what do we fail? • 2. Why does God need all the angels? • 3. When it appears to be easy, do not be prideful. Give it your full strength.
