Muslim Women vs. Western Women Heloisa, Karinna, Daniela
What the Quran says about women • Forbids female infanticide • Instructs Muslims to educate daughters as well as sons • Insists that women have the right to refuse a prospective husband • Gives women rights if they are divorced by their husband • Gives women the right to divorce in certain cases • Gives women the right to own and inherit property • While polygamy is permitted, it is discouraged
What the Bible says about women Old Testament: • the pain of a woman during childbirth is God's curse because of Eve's transgression • A man can sell his daughter and she must not go free as male slaves do • A woman who saves her husband from an attacker, but touches the private parts of the attacker, must be shown no pity and have her hand amputated • The daughter must receive inheritance if there is no son
What the Bible says about Women New Testament: • Women must never teach or have authority over a man, because according to the Bible, Eve sinned first and not Adam • Wives must obey their husbands, like they obey God • Women are to be silent in church as it is forbidden for them to speak in Church and they must be obedient. If they had a question they must ask their husbands because it is a shame for women to speak in Church • Men are the head of women just as Christ is the head of man • Women must cover their heads in prayers and if they do not they must shave their heads • Men are the image and glory of God, while women are the glory of man
The Veil • Women may wear whatever they want at home with their families and close friends. • Hijab (literally "covering up" in Arabic) - Hijab is a common sight among Muslim women, a scarf that covers their hair and neck. • Niqab(meaning "full veil”) - Niqab consists of covering up completely, including gloves and a veil for the face - leaving just a slit for the eyes, or covering them too with transparent material • Western women think – “Given this assumption, it is not difficult to see that hijab, in and of itself, can be considered a manifestation of inequality–women wear it, but men do not.”
Western Customs • Americans emphasize on “equal rights” • Don’t cover themselves • Women are independent • Women are allowed to participate in war • Are free to dress to express themselves
Islamic Customs • Five Pillars: • Shahadah, the sincere declaration of Muslim faith; • Salah, praying five times a day; • Zakat, give donation for the ones who are needed; • Hajj, going to Mecca at least once; • Sawm, which is the lack of food in the month of the Ramadan . • There is also a fasting marking the end of Ramadan called the Eid el Fitr. • Muslim women have no room in war for what they stand for, their hopes or aspirations. Their voice is progressively silenced.
What they think • Dislike 'promiscuity, pornography, and public indecency’ • They believe that sexual freedom does not by any means symbolize liberty. In fact they believe that women are often subject of disrespect in the foreign nations.
