Example 10.1 Fox and McDonald
A centrifugal pump is used to pump 150 gpm of water. The water enters the impeller axially through a 1.25 inch diameter inlet. The inlet velocity is axial and uniform. The impeller outlet diameter is 4 inches. Flow leaves the impeller at 10 ft/s relative to the blades, which are radial at the exit. The impeller speed is 3450 rpm. Determine (a) the impeller exit width b2, (b) the torque input, (c) the power predicted by the Euler turbine equation, and (d) the head rise predicted across the pump.
Although not explicitly stated in the problem, the Euler Turbomachine Equation assumes the efficiency = 1. The rate of work done on a turbomachine is referred to by several terms which mean the same thing. When working with pumps, we usually call the shaft power the brake horsepower or bhp. This is the rate of work done on a turbomachine rotor. Some books call the bhp mechanical power, and use the notation . That notation is used in this example.
