  1. Director’s Cost, Schedule and Status Review of the sPHENIX Infrastructure and Facility UpgradeWBS 2.02: Superconducting Magnet Kin Yip Collider-Accelerator Department Oct. 16, 2019 BNL Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  2. Superconducting Magnet • The Superconducting Magnet was originally built ~1997-98 for the BaBar Experiment at SLAC and used until BaBar ended in Apr. 2008. • It was brought to BNL ~ Feb. 3 (near midnight), 2015. • In the current design, it should produce ~1.4 T at 4596 A in sPHENIX in 1008 of RHIC. Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  3. Original conductor/coil Specifications ~1.3Tin the High-Field Test ~1.4 T in sPHENIX Heavily stabilized ~ 276% margin Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  4. Valvebox Extension Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  5. Technical Progress • ~A year after its arrival, the Low-Field Test (100 A) was performed successfully on Mar. 22, 2016. • It took another ~20 months to build the Flux Return (Steel Box). After the cool-down, we started the High-Field Test ~ Jan. 22, 2018. • On Feb. 13, 2018, we reached ~4830 A (5% over the operating current ~4600 A) and stayed until we needed to slowly discharge before the liquid helium ran out (~> 40 minutes). We repeated that on Feb. 16. We’ve also learnt that we can’t/shouldn’t ramp too fast. • This test has also been a test of the quench detection system. Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  6. High-Field Test [ off-project ] Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  7. High-Field Test [ off-project ] Due to the limitedCryo capability in Bldg. 912, we have had to program accurately when to start the cool. Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  8. Recent Progress • We’ve removed the Valvebox from the Magnet on Feb. 1, 2019 and later installed a bottom pipe (from BaBar) to seal the Valvebox to prevent further moisture from entering the system. • We have taken time/effort to open up the two junction boxes to look at the voltage taps and added spare before we closed them up for good. • We also made the transport tool (though not necessary). • We are waiting for • the riggers to be • available to remove • the Magnet from the • steel box used in the • High-Field Test; and • then we can install the • transport tool and flush • with dry nitrogen. 9. Recent Progress (cont.) • RFP362765 (Helium Cryogenic System --- Cost Driver): • Scoring meetings were held on Wed. (Sept. 11 & 19, 2019) where the scorers (R. Than, P. Orfin, J. Mills, D. Passarello & G. McIntyre) explained their scores and compromised on their scoring. We collectively decided which vendor to give the contract to on Sept. 19, 2019 and the BNL procurement department is doing the paperworks. • We are considering the possibilities of working with the Magnet Division and/or CERN mapper group to do magnetic field mapping in 2022. • Our magnet physicist/expert W. Meng has helped make the detailed 3-D sPHENIX Magnet model using the Opera package and responded to any questions. 15. Schedule Drivers • The High-Field Test [off-project] Done • Some milestones (from reality and P6): • 2019-2-1: ValveBox Disassembled (as scheduled ~Mar. 2018 Director’s Review) • 2019-12-31: Magnet (Field Measurement) Engineering & Design Complete • 2020-1-9: Coil Ready to Ship • 2022-3-2 : RHIC Helium interface – Installation complete • 2022-5-4 : Warm Piping System completed • 2022-6-13: Magnet is operational • 2022-6-14: Field Mapping works start … • The Magnet will be sitting in Bldg. 912 until ~Fall 2021. Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review

  16. Risks, Issues and Concerns • As what has been suggested in the Director’s Review, we acknowledge two risks : • Risk of damaging during the transportation from Bldg. 912 to Bldg. 1008 : We’ll have air ride tractor and trailer to ship the Cryostat slowly anyway. • Risk that the full-field test for the Magnet has not performed for many hours/days. There is nothing we can do (as the reviewers said) but we just acknowledge there is such a risk. • The “2022” schedule is the most challenging compared to the years before, as we need to wait for the infrastructure (e.g. platform) to be ready and deal with the RHIC Run schedule uncertainty. The magnet testing and magnetic field mapping can be done either before or after the 2022 run as the sPHENIX Magnet Cryogenic System taps into the RHIC Cryogenic System. 17. ES&H and Quality Assurance ES&H: • Held LESHC (Lab. Environment, Safety & Health Committee) – PCSS (Pressure & Cryogenic Safety Subcommittee) Reviews on May 22, 2015 and Dec. 5, 2018. • Held C-AD Magnet Reviews on Mar. 17, 2016 and Dec. 15, 2017. • Held Combined ASSRC (Accelerator System Safety Review Committee)/ESRC (Experimental Safety Review Committee) reviews on Dec. 8, 2015 and July 6, 2017. • Enhanced work permits have been used multiple times, including lifting the Magnet into the temporary Return Steel Box. Will do all again in 2022 QA : • Subsystems of Cryo, He, LN2 and Warm piping, all adhere to the ASME codes. • Make use of C-AD document control system, Windchill, to keep tracks of documents. • Submit USI (Unreviewed Safety Issues) to the Lab. for cryo addition and ODH change in IP8 for revision in RHIC ASE(Accelerator Safety Envelope)/SAD (safety assessment document). • Will visit the vendor to make sure the production of helium transfer lines is sound. 21. Summary • We have done various tests on the BaBar Magnet successfully to verify that it can be used for the sPHENIX experiment. • Since the High-Field Test and last Director’s Review, we have made progress in various fronts including installing spare voltage taps, finishing “Cryo Helium purchase” and various magnetic field simulation etc. • We have been working with others in the Infrastructure project to facilitate the Magnet installation at IR8. • You’ll hear more talks (Transport/Assembly, Cryo, Power Supply/Quench Detector and Magnetic Field) in the afternoon. 24. 2.2 Magnet – Risk Registry • A couple old risks have been mitigated. Eg. for the item of “Magnet temp. sensors too far to read”, we have obtained one original CLTS(Cryogenic Linear Temperature Sensor) board from BaBar/Ansaldo which changes resistance to 4-20 mA.  We have tested it and it worked.  We have then made copies of this board for as many channels as we need. • Residual Risks: Director's Cost, Schedule and Status Review
