  3. Membership Statistics • * down 139 members, but projecting to be ahead of 2010 numbers • by end of August • ComSochad 1,350 affiliates at the end of July, which is 225% more • than at end of July 2010

M&I Relations: Corporate Patron Program • No new participants – still have: • LG-Bronze level • SK-bronze • Cisco-Bronze • Samsung-Platinum • KT-bronze Prospects: • Sent information to leads suggested by Industry PromotionCommittee members, with no results. • Had good teleconference with AT&T, but no replies to follow-ups • No positive results from Byeong’s meetings with NTT or NEC – NTTdeclined to participate • Have not had any feedback from Byeong’s trip to China Plan to start contacting existing participants about renewals soon

WCET & Wireless Training Summary • Wireless training strong: • 288 registrants in 8 courses in 2011, YTD • 6 courses and 2 Metro Area Workshops remain for 2011 • Includes one-day in person courses, one-day virtual courses, 3 day in-person, and 5 day virtual • Vetting 6 new potential instructors this Fall • WCET – 42 seats for Spring window; 30 applied for Fall 2011, YTD • New WCET Practice Exam available • WEBOK sales in excess of 2,000; new edition in preparation

GOLD SESSIONS @GC 2011 • The GOLD session at GC 2010 was very successful • The GOLD Session for GC’11 (GC’12?) is under preparation • How to write a good paper for ComSoc journals • Meet the Editor-in-Chiefs (EICs) of ComSoc Journals & Magazines • Provide a forum for young researchers and young professionals to interact ComSoc leaders • Attract more young professionals to ComSoc and GOLD

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL CENTER • Launched and publicized during GC’10 • Graphical design • Max Loskutnikov has volunteered for graphic design (banners, layout, pictures), and make it a microsite under the roof of ComSoc website • New volunteers are being recruited to serve as webmaster for update and site maintenance http://cms.comsoc.org/eprise/main/SiteGen/Young/Content/Home.html

  18. GOLD BEST PAPER AWARD • GC’10 • Received 100+ inquiries about GOLD and ComSoc membership • 4 papers out 80 were given awards, • Winners chosen by 6 committee members • Results published on YPC web portal and GC’10 website • GC’11 • Under preparation • Expecting strong interest

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT • Soon Wan heading Volunteers recruitment • Open Call for Volunteers were sent out to all ComSoc GOLD members through e-notice • Received ~250 responses • 50 replied with detailed information (skills, interests, etc.) • Will assign the volunteers to different committee/initiatives based on their skills and interests

Sections Congress- Top 5 Reccd The top 5 recommendations as ranked by the primary section delegates IEEE to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy to increase the number of next generation youth pursuing science and engineering careers. As members maintain their IEEE membership over their years, IEEE must reward them for their loyalty. Rewards ought to be tangible and useful and can be done simply and inexpensively. Create Global Fidelity Programs including: (a) Continue membership Recognition 5-10-15-20 years of membership (b) Bonus for specific Benefits (e.g., reduced fee, IEEE merchandise, etc). IEEE membership (including e-Membership) should include a Society membership as part of the basic membership fee. Increased support to students in technical activities with grants to attend conferences and organization of technical competitions. To encourage interest in pre-university students in engineering careers, IEEE to publish a subscription periodical (paper or electronic) targeted to high school students that highlights engineering activities of interest to those students. The periodical should also have articles promoting the benefits of an engineering career and what the students can do in college to get involved with IEEE

ComSoc Conferences held in EMEA Region • 12 Events organised in the EMEA Region in 2011 - either directly sponsored or co-sponsored by ComSoc • To be held in: - Italy (3), Spain (3), Germany (1), Finland (1), Israel (1),Greece (1), Ireland (1), Belgium (1). • 2011 IEEE Database of Conferences - ComSoc is associated with 54 conferences in the EMEA Region .

EWI –ComSoc Cyber Security Summit London 1-2 June 2011 • ComSoc in partnership with EWI (East West Institute) held the Second Worldwide Cyber Security Summit in London. • Summit attracted an impressive range of international speakers, distinguished authorities, major industry leaders and government officials • Interesting conference model, with Plenary talks, followed by ‘Breakthrough groups’ to elicit specific recommendations for future actions. • Several ComSoc members involved in review of papers

  34. Competitor Analysis for EMEA • An analysis has been conducted on membership and performance of ComSoc chapters in EMEA Region, and interesting trends identified (see Tariq slides)

  35. Two Motions are proposed • Motion 1 is concerned with increasing cooperation with Region 8, by exploring opportunities to partner in Regional conferences • Motion 2 is concerned with recognising volunteer effort in the EMEA region which is above and beyond the norm

Motion 1 • IEEE ComSoc OpCom approves that EMEA Region Director explores the possibility of a joint conference or a track in an IEEE Region 8 Conference devoted to emerging topics in Communications, or on practitioner-related subjects, to provide support for ComSoc EMEA members in industry • Financial implications: None

  37. Motion 2 • IEEE ComSoc OpCom approves the establishment of an annual Volunteer Recognition Award given to an IEEE ComSoc Member in the EMEA Region for excellence in volunteer services in support of membership growth • Financial implications: A plaque and an honorarium of $400
