Archimede V The journey begins...
Presentation plan • The team • Archimede IV • 2007 results • Submarine pros/cons • Potential amelioration projects • Fabrication of the submarine • -Hull design • -Propeller and shroud design
Presentation plan (continued) • 2008 amelioration projects • New reinforced nose • New fin design & fabrication • Future ameliorations • New hull design • New propeller system
2008-2009 New team • Project director : Jonathan Beaulieu • Pilot & Treasurer: David Ponton-Fournier • Composites director& Treasurer: Alexis Payment • Electronics director : Frédéric Bergeron • Mechanics director : Alexandre Brière • Finance & Marketing director : Maxime Mailloux • Fabrication director : Nicolas Bezeau-Gervais
Archimede IVSubmarine pros • Innovative gearbox design • Propeller designed 900 rpm is reachable • Lower drag coefficient with the use of a shroud • Less power loss due to turbulence
Archimede IVSubmarine cons • Unefficient fin design • Fins were too fragile and broke easily
Archimede IVSubmarine pros/cons – FE analysis Hull design verified using finite element methods. The hull not being symmetrical ameliorations are possible.
Archimede IVPotential ameliorations • Fin design • Submarine overall shape • Submarine total frontal area due to previous pilot size (6’2” – 100 kg)
Presentation plan • The team • Archimede IV • 2007 results • Submarine pros/cons • Potential amelioration projects • 2008 amelioration projects • New fin design/fabrication • New fin installation • Amelioration projects
Amelioration projectsNew fins design/fabrication • Stronger fins, less breakable • Bigger bonding area to the submarine • Longer fins on submarine total length positively affecting submarine stability because of the fixed front part
Amelioration projectsNew fins design/fabrication • Smaller directional fins to increase control and steering of the submarine • More efficient movement of the fin directly affecting submarine stability in water
Amelioration projectsNew nose design/fabrication • 2007 nose was entirely fiberglass and very fragile
Amelioration projectsNew nose design/fabrication • 2009 nose design has not changed • Nose failure in previous competitions encouraged us to reinforce it • Kevlar coated for 2009 which increases total mechanical resistance
Archimede VFabrication • Hull made out of a layer of corecell between two layers of fiberglass • Hull counterpart made out of foam • Mold then made out of that counterpart
Archimede VThe shroud • Shroud made of fiberglass • Designed in accordance with the propeller and submarine • Givesbetter and more concentrated flow of water
Archimede VPropelling system • Propeller – Designed by specialists (Nautican) Machined at École Polytechnique de Montréal • Optimized for 900 rpm in accordance to 1:8 gearbox ratio
Archimede VGearbox • Gearbox made out of aluminium plates • Gears from Boston gears made of steel • Ratio of 1:8 connected to bicycled pedals with clips
Archimede VSafetyfeatures • Pop-up buoy with deadman switch • Orange stickers clearly indicate release procedures
Archimede VFuture ameliorations • New and improved hull design • Symmetrical with reduced drag • Increased gearbox ratio for maximum output speed • New bi-propeller system
