Where did it all begin? • Misconceptions over homeopathy in our patients • Confused with herbalism – same nomenclature • Homeopathy differs in toxicity, and it’s use • Important to address this for homeopathy’s future within our podiatry practice Frye J C (2003) Herbal and homeopathic medicine: understanding the difference. Dilemma • Availability of supplements • Patients often are unable to evaluate the quality of evidence available • Healthcare professionals frequently lack time or interest to research studies that document the potential benefits • Aware of drug : herb interactions J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Uninformed or fearful • Dismiss as useless or even dangerous • Patients fearful of telling the practitioner they are taking any supplements. Potential fatal consequences • Misconception that natural is safe J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Herbal or Homeopathic? Caulophyllum thialictroides J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Confusion with Caulophyllum • Tragic neonatal death from congestive heart failure • Patient’s mother took 3 x more than recommended from a store selling naturopathic products • Scant information about supposed causative agent Blue Cohash (Caulophyllum) – herbal or homeopathic? • Cascade of other negative reports J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Herbal, homeopathic, or allopathic? • Approx. 2000 homeopathic preparations are derived from herbs and called by their botanical names • Some even have same indication for use e.g. Colchicine for gout • 50% of conventionally used drugs have their origins in traditionally used herbs • Perceived synergistic effect of whole plant more gentle, safe, and effective J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Audits’ aim • Audit a sample of our patients with a simple short survey • Produce a questionnaire to elicit any confusion in our patients regarding natural, complementary, and supplementary medicine • Analyse the data • Inform and improve our practice • Disseminate the outcome to colleagues J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
Questionnaire • A4 sheet, ‘yes’ ‘no’ answers, some free text • Demographics • Knowledge of homeopathy... interested in knowing more • Use of natural/complementary medicine • Use of vitamin and mineral supplements • Business marketing question J E Greenwood L M Peatfield
